Water Risk - Communication & Training Intern

Overview:
WRI’s Markets & Enterprise Program seeks a full-time, energetic intern to join the Water Risk Team. The Markets and Enterprise Program seeks to direct the flow of capital towards sustainable businesses, doing research and building tools to assess and integrate environmental risk and opportunities into business strategy and investment decisions. Water scarcity, partly driven by climate change, is an area where the Program seeks to provide company managers and investors with more detailed and actionable information.

The intern will play a joint communications support and research role in the Aqueduct project, which measures and maps companies’ and investors’ water risk.

Aqueduct is an online database and suite of applications to quantify, aggregate and map the physical, regulatory and socio-economic components of water risks. Companies and their investors are increasingly recognizing the importance of these risks leveraging their key competencies to decrease their water dependency and/or increase their water security. Aqueduct is not only an online global database with localized water risk information, but also seeks to become the global standard for measuring and reporting geographic water risk.

Aqueduct enables:
  • Companies to better map and manage water risk for their global operations and supply chains at the local level,
  • Governments and organizations to develop more effective investment programs and policy reforms, and
  • Investors to more accurately assess companies’ water risks.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop parameters for and maintain Aqueduct’s Water Risk News database of the latest news and research on water risk issues from around the world
  • Support Aqueduct’s Outreach Associate with social media, blog drafting, web content, and general outreach and communication surrounding the new Aqueduct mapping tool.
  • Assist with the development of online training webinars and help coordinate and respond to applicants
  • Research and develop new and innovative ways to apply Aqueduct’s global water risk maps for new audiences.
  • Support the Water Risk Team as required.

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated understanding of and interest in water issues and policy
  • Excellent research, communication and presentation skills,
  • Excellent command of English and demonstrated writing skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with excel, database, and GIS software or web design preferred,
  • Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner,
  • Results focused, organized, comfortable working independently within a collaborative research team, and
  • Undergraduate degree in finance, economics, business, hydrology, physical or human geography, engineering, or related field.

Transport & Climate Change Research Intern (LEDS-GP)

Overview:
The Climate and Energy Program (CEP) and EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute's Center for Sustainable Transport, are looking for a research intern to support of the CEP-EMBARQ leadership of the Low Emissions Development Strategies Global Partnership Transport Working Group (LEDS-GP Transport WG). 
 
The CEP - EMBARQ Transport & Climate Change Research Intern will work closely with CEP - EMBARQ’s Transport & Climate Change Team and with CEP and EMBARQ researchers on a variety of research and writing assignments, including sustainable low-carbon transport instruments and financial mechanisms.
 
The position reports to the CEP-EMBARQ Transport & Climate Change Director and is located at WRI’s headquarters in Washington, DC. It is a 3-months minimum (6 months preference) paid internship with flexible start and end dates, with an ideal start in March 2013. Some travel may be required.
 
It will be a unique hands-on experience that will also create immediate impact for the Transport & Climate Change initiative.

About the Low Emissions Development Strategies Global Partnership (LEDS-GP) 
The Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) Global Partnership was founded to enhance coordination, information exchange, and cooperation among programs and countries working to advance low emissions growth. Launched in early 2011, the LEDS Global Partnership has made significant progress advancing collaboration and learning across more than 100 developing and developed country governments, technical institutes, and multilateral organizations engaged in low emissions development. Building on the success of its first 18 months, the LEDS Global Partnership is advancing and expanding its work program to support priority activities defined by its members.  These priorities are primarily based on the needs and opportunities for peer learning, collaboration, and technical support defined by developing countries through the regional platforms.

The LEDS-GP Transport Work Stream is intended to promote low emissions development in the transportation sector through peer-to-peer learning, training and information exchange along with expert advice and matchmaking with international programs, sharing best practices, providing enhanced opportunities for coordination and collaboration, leveraging further investment in low-carbon transport infrastructure, and enabling implementation on local, national, and regional levels in response to needs identified through the regional platforms.
Responsibilities:
70% Research and Data Analysis:
  • Assists with research and data analysis on topics related to sustainable low-carbon transport instruments and financial mechanisms
  • Collects and analyzes information; and monitors and analyzes relevant material from conferences and seminars, academic journals, and reports from a wide variety of sources, including NGOs.
  • Plans and executes quantitative data analysis; prepares results to complement published material.
  • Summarizes existing literature and research results for incorporation into research publications, presentations, and briefing memos.
  • Works collaboratively with research staff to develop and complete writing assignments. Completes assignments while identifying gaps as well as questions, and in accordance with deadlines.
  • Occasional manuscript review and factual verification.
20% Outreach:
  • Supports focused training and peer learning sessions through LEDS regional and global workshops and webinars
  • Maintains relationships with external partners
    on related research and action.
  • Maintains relations with internal partners
  • Maintains a master calendar of sustainable low-carbon
    transportation milestones; national conferences, research and publications, and
    other related events.
10% Administrative:
  • Participates in meetings as related to special assignments.
  • Gains clear knowledge of program structure and protocol by learning organizational chart, research portfolios, administrative units, and associated staff.
  • Provides office support to include word processing, faxing, copying, filing, and mailing.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in low-carbon transportation economics, urban planning, public policy, or other related field required;   Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least one year of work experience required; two years of work experience preferred.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish. Knowledge of Portuguese is a plus.
  • Demonstrated interest in urban transportation/low-carbon development required;
  • Strong writing skills required.
  •  Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel (or other spreadsheet programs) and capacity to learn other types of graphics and presentation programs required;
  •  Strong organization, high initiative, clear interpersonal skills, eye for detail, creativity and design, mature judgment, team player, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment required.
  •  Competence to undertake high-profile research

About the Multi-lateral Development Banks (MDBs) $175b commitment for sustainable transport 
In June 2012, the eight largest multilateral development banks announced at Rio+20 conference that they will invest $175 billion in sustainable transportation systems over the next ten years to support sustainable transport in developing countries. This unprecedented commitment has the potential to be a game changer for cities by reducing congestion, improving air quality, reducing road fatalities and mitigating climate change. The transport sector has been largely neglected in the global sustainable development agenda. Ten years ago transportation wasn’t even in the discussion; now it’s a major outcome from the world’s preeminent conference on sustainable development.

Responsibilities:
80% Research and Data Analysis:
  • Assists with research and data analysis on topics related to sustainable low-carbon transport definition and financial mechanisms, Monitoring Reporting Verification (MRV) framework and principles that could be established to track these commitments, and mechanism to leverage the MDBs commitment with private finance
  • Collects and analyzes information; and monitors and analyzes relevant material from conferences and seminars, academic journals, and reports from a wide variety of sources, including NGOs. 
  • Plans and executes quantitative data analysis; prepares results to complement published material.

Development Intern, EMBARQ

Overview:
EMBARQ, the center for sustainable transport at the World Resources Institute, is seeking a Development Intern to support strategies that will build fund development capacity and operational efficiencies across its global network. At the end of the term, the intern will have not only new skills and experience, but also credit for helping produce a tangible portfolio of tools and resources that will advance EMBARQ’s global strategy.

The Cause: Transportation is at the intersection of human development and the environment. The demand for passenger and freight transport is expected to double between 2005 and 2020. The consequences--increased congestion, pollution, road fatalities, negative health impacts, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions--demand attention now. That’s where EMBARQ comes in.
The EMBARQ global network catalyzes environmentally and financially sustainable transport solutions to improve quality of life in cities. Since 2002, the network has expanded to Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Turkey and the Andean Region. The position: The rapid expansion and EMBARQ’s bold global strategy is requiring new and streamlined fund development systems that will support the culturally and geographically diverse offices, and a target fundraising goal of $20 million annually by 2016. The intern will play a vital role in advancing this objective.
The position will interact with offices in 6 countries, and with multiple departments at the global office. It will be a unique hands-on experience that will also create immediate impact for the organization. The position reports to the EMBARQ Global Development Director and is located at WRI’s headquarters in Washington, DC. This is a part-time internship with a small stipend, flexible start and end dates, ideal start in March 2013.
Responsibilities:
  • Work with Development Director to design special funding initiatives.
  • Research new global funding opportunities and assist international centers with some country-specific opportunities, to help produce a pipeline of prospects.
  • Develop a proposal wiki, in coordination with the Communications team.
  • Support engagements with international centers, including preparing presentations and revenue analysis.
  • Assist in creation and monitoring of reporting tools on a Salesforce platform, such as proposal tracking, funding opportunities and donor communications.
  • Collect impactful stories from international centers.
  • Assist with fundraising proposals and grant reports as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree, or nearing a degree, in business administration, marketing, or non-profit management with some work experience in non-profit organizations, particularly fund development.
  • Exceptionally organized and detail-oriented with a good mind for systems.
  • Demonstrated initiative and independence.
  • Familiarity with fundraising databases, particularly Raiser’s Edge.
  • Desire to pursue fund development career track.
  • Comfortable in multicultural environment.
  • Excellent ability to communicate clearly, passionately, and confidently.
  • Strong writing skills.
