Overview
The People & Ecosystems Program at the World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks a results-oriented individual with excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills for an intern position to support Project POTICO. Project POTICO is an innovative, new strategy designed to break the link between oil palm expansion and Indonesia’s rapid deforestation, through the use of low-carbon degraded land. The POTICO team is conducting various research and activities designed to take the degraded land use concept to scale in Indonesia.

A major initiative of this project are two online web applications, the Suitability Mapper and Forest Cover Analyzer, which were designed to enable key stakeholders to make improved land use decisions precipitating sustainable palm oil. These web tools provide (1) easily accessible land use and land cover data (2) a mapping application for identifying high potential areas for sustainable oil palm plantation expansion and (3) a forest cover analysis tool to be used by members of the Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil and others to assesswhere forest cover change has occurred within oil palm concessions. Visit http://www.wri.org/project/potico to access the tools. While currently limited to Kalimantan, POTICO plans to expand the tools to include all of Indonesia.

The intern will assist with an evaluation of the project’s outcomes to date, working closely with POTICO’s Outreach Officer based in Jakarta.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct phone and in-person interviews with selected representatives from Project POTICO’s key stakeholder groups, including government, the private sector, and civil society organizations.
  • Research and evaluate government regulations and laws according to a set of criteria.
  • Identify needed adjustments to the evaluation methodology and revise the indicators.
  • Compile and process evaluation results. Collaborate with the POTICO team to create a report presenting the results to our funder.
  • Support other activities as needed.
Qualifications
  • Ideal candidate will have or be working towards a Bachelors or Masters degree in forestry, agriculture, environmental science, public policy, political science or other relevant fields.
  • Proven experience conducting surveys and analyzing results.
  • Strong research skills, experience producing literature reviews.
  • Experience analyzing Indonesian law and government regulations.
  • Experience communicating with Indonesian government officials is a plus.
  • Very strong writing skills and excellent academic performance.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written English and Bahasa Indonesia.
  • Familiarity with or interest in Indonesian forest and/or agriculture issues.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team, and work under tight deadlines.
  • Legally able to work in Indonesia.

Location: Jakarta, Indonesia

Salary: Hourly wage commensurate with qualifications

Employment Period: April 24 – May 31, with possibility of extension

Overview
The Grants and Contracts Assistant works with the Grants and Contracts Director and Grants Specialist to oversee the financial and compliance management of all grants, contracts and sub-recipients.
Responsibilities
Sub-recipient Oversight:
  • Enhances and maintains the subrecipient monitoring tracking system. 
  • Maintains a system for tracking all sub-recipient due diligence documents and processes.
  • Works with program staff on the timely and accurate submission of subgrantee progress and financial reports.  
  • Maintains and updates the subgrantee reporting requirements in a database. 
  • Maintains the sub-recipient audit requirement tracking system. 
  • Develops sub-recipient files that meet legal and auditing requirements.
  • Develops, maintains, and processes subagreements related paperwork.  
Grants and Financial Management:
  • Tracks contract deliverables to ensure that they are submitted within the period of performance and prepares invoices and monitors the receipt of payments. 
  • Monitors life of grant reporting requirements, and maintains database where deadlines are tracked and reports captured and keeps program staff alerted to upcoming grant reporting deadlines. 
  • Maintains user-friendly “grants-management” resources for staff in the WRI’s Intranet.
  • Develops, maintains, and processes grant related paperwork. 
  • Creates and maintains grants/contracts and proposal files that meet legal and auditing requirements.
Qualifications
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in grants and contracts management preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Attention to deadlines and detail oriented, particularly with regard to donor agreements, contracts and other related legal documents
  • Strong process orientation with sensitivity to quality.
  • Team player able to work independently or as member of a group.
  • Strong MS Office skills, including demonstrated experience working with databases.
  • Patience and perseverance in understanding and explaining issues with program staff.
  • Working knowledge and experience applying OMB Circulars A-110 and A-133 a plus.

Overview
The Electricity Governance Initiative (EGI) (http://electricitygovernance.wri.org) seeks a highly motivated and independent person to play a significant role in its research during the summer of 2013. EGI is a global network of civil society organizations dedicated to promoting transparent, inclusive and accountable decision-making in the electricity sector. EGI facilitates a collaboration of civil society, policymakers, regulators, and other electricity sector actors using a common framework to define “good governance.”

This intern will work on a paper that seeks to build on previous study by WRI that assessed successful country level energy efficiency programs for household appliances. This second proposed study intends to build on this previous research to help build a stronger case for consumer involvement in label design process, which will ultimately lead to greater consumer awareness and low carbon development. Specifically, the project will determine if the provision of a supplemental flyer / label that gives potential consumers information relating to the operational cost of the appliance will enhance the likelihood of consumers purchasing more energy efficient appliances. 
Responsibilities
  • Conduct primary and secondary research on energy efficient labels to identify “success indicators” particularly in relation to provision of operational costs of the appliances
  • Assist in additional project research, writing and editing as needed
  • Write communications pieces for EGI and WRI website on project progress
[Some travel will be required]
Qualifications
EGI seeks applicants with a background in energy policy, international affairs/relations, political science, economics, electrical engineering, or a related field. Successful applicants will have a demonstrated interest in energy and/or governance issues, developing countries, and an understanding of the role that legal and political systems play in governing the electricity sector.

Applicants must possess:
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Some knowledge of international development and environmental issues;
  • Interest in role of online communications in international networks, policy forums;
  • Strong computer skills - (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc);
  • Attention to detail, be highly organized, and be able to work both in a team and independently;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary setting.
 Compensation and Duration:
  • This is internship will include a small stipend, to be negotiated. It will also cover reasonable travel costs associated with the position.
  • This position will be based in India, preferably in Chennai, Bangalore or Mumbai.
  • Internship either full-time or part-time (20 hours/week).

Overview
The World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks an intern to support EMBARQ’s Research & Practice team. The intern will contribute to development efforts, coordinating with EMBARQ’s Development staff, and provide contract management support by drafting and tracking contracts. Also, the intern will curate program information and update sustainable transport content to provide knowledge management via EMBARQ’s Salesforce online tool. In support of the EMBARQ network’s publication process, the intern will create templates to facilitate quality assurance and assess the network staff’s language skills.

EMBARQ is the World Resources Institute’s sustainable transport program. The EMBARQ global network catalyzes environmentally and financially sustainable transport solutions to improve quality of life in cities. Since 2002, the network has grown to include six centers in Mexico, Brazil, India, Turkey, China and the Andean Region, which are focused on implementing concrete changes to improve mobility in many of the world’s most important cities, in coordination with a Washington, D.C.-based team of distinguished experts. By focusing on transport, which affects everything from prosperity to pollution, EMBARQ seeks to generate significant social, environmental and economic benefits in the cities and communities where it works.

This is a three-month internship, ideally starting by June 2013. The position is located in WRI’s Washington, D.C. office and will report to Research & Practice’s Program Coordinator II. The internship offers an opportunity to engage with staff with expertise in sustainable transportation and urban development, non-profit management and administration and fundraising.
Responsibilities
The Intern’s main areas of responsibility will include approximately: 
  • 20% Development (fundraising) support

Development support
  • Update funding opportunities database.
  • Research funding prospects.
  • Format key CVs or other proposal material.
Contract management
  • Update/improve contract management work flow worksheet.
  • Draft contract language.
  • Support contracts and payments administration.
Knowledge Management
  • Curate program information in EMBARQ’s Salesforce-based knowledge management system.
  • Index and update library of sustainable transport content.
Quality Assurance
  • Draft publications quality assurance process templates.
  • Complete EMBARQ network language skills audit.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in any field with demonstrated administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and spoken English skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Superb attention to detail.
  • Ability to juggle multiple assignments at once.
  • Demonstrated experience in improving or creating processes.
  • Enthusiasm for contributing to group project outcomes.
  • Already possess US work authorization.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous project management and/or development, finance, budgeting, or accounting experience.

Overview
EMBARQ’s Research & Practice team seeks an intern to research and support new applications of GIS and data visualization in urban transport and planning. The intern will research and summarize the state of practice in GIS, remote sensing, crowd sourcing data and data visualization in the urban planning/transport field.  He/she will lead development of several online maps and charts in support of ongoing research projects.

EMBARQ is the World Resources Institute’s (WRI’s) center for sustainable transport. The EMBARQ global network catalyzes environmentally and financially sustainable transport solutions to improve quality of life in cities. Since 2002, the network has grown to include six centers in Mexico, Brazil, India, Turkey, the Andean Region and China, which are focused on improving mobility in many of the world’s most important cities. This is a 3-month paid summer internship. The position is located in WRI’s Washington, D.C. office and reports to EMBARQ’s Senior Associate in Research and Practice. The internship offers the opportunity to engage with sustainable transportation and urban development experts around the world.
Responsibilities
The intern’s main areas of responsibility will include approximately: 
  • 40% Desktop research
  • 30% Expertise assessment
  • 30% Data visualizations
Desktop research
  • Research the state of the practice in urban transport/planning applications of GIS, remote sensing, crowd sourced data, data visualizations and open data.
  • Identify and summarize key research, experts and applications in the field.
  • Document findings for an internal audience.
Expertise assessment
  • Develop and implement a survey of EMBARQ network staff relevant skills, tolls and experiences.
  • Contribute to a strategic assessment of EMBARQ’s strengths and opportunities in this field.
  • Design and curate an expert speaker series for internal audiences.
Data visualizations
  • Support ongoing projects with conceptualization, design and implementation of online and print data visualizations.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a graduate degree in GIS, computer science, transport planning/engineering, or urban/regional planning;
  • Demonstrated expertise designing and deploying maps or data visualizations;
  • Familiarity with a variety of open data formats, online platforms, mapping and visualization tools;
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills;
  • Solid visual design and user experience skills and sensibilities;
  • Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner;
  • Knowledge of basic HTML and CSS;
  • Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign;
  • Ability to work well in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
  • Already possess US work authorization;
  • Results focused, organized and comfortable working independently within a collaborative research team.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 1 year experience in online mapping and visualization tool development and implementation, for an urban planning/transport application;
  • Experience developing or implementing online mapping or visualization tools in developing country contexts;
  • Demonstrated research experience;
  • Knowledge of Mandarin, Spanish and/or Portuguese.
