Volunteer: Shanghai – Physicians and ESL teachers

Recruiting US physicians for Shanghai, China to volunteer, as faculty, to train medical students in basic medicine and the physical sciences. Also recruiting qualified ESL teachers to teach first year medical students comprehensive English.

Background: Founded in 1952 during the nation-wide reorganization of institutes of higher education, Shanghai Second Medical College was a merger of the School of Medicine of St. John’s University (1896-1952), the Medical College of Aurora University (1918-1952), and the Tong-De Medical College, three long-standing medical cathedrals. In 1985, the school was renamed Shanghai Second Medical University. In July, 2005, under an agreement signed by Shanghai Municipal Government and the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University, both with a long history, were merged into one. The new medical school was named Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM).

In the more than 50 years since its founding, following the Ministry of Education on medical educational policy and based on the needs of the society for medical personnel, SJTUSM has greatly expanded its scale and improved teaching quality. From the 2 undergraduate programs, SJTUSM now has the 5- years medical education program, 7-year master medical education program of clinical medicine, 8-year programs of clinical medicine and oral medicine with Ph.D degree, as well as 10 other health related undergraduate and graduate programs which are Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Biomedical Engineering, Public Health Administration, Nutrition, Marketing, Pharmacology and Preventive Medicine.

SJTUSM has under its administration 7 affiliated general hospitals, 5 affiliated special hospitals, and 15 teaching centers for clinical practice, with the total number of beds for patients reaching 11,999,constituting the richest teaching resources among all medical schools in the country. SJTUSM has 21 colleges and departments. Currently it has about 6,800 students at the undergraduate level and above, half of them being graduate students.
SJTUSM will recruit 30 students, selected from the College Entrance Examination, in 2012. These students will be selected to join in the English Medical Class as a way to enter the medical field in China. The objective of the English Medical Class is to teach basic medicine as well as clinical medicine in English during this 5 year program. The first two years are didactic, focusing on basic medicine and the physical sciences, such as anatomy, biology, chemistry, and pharmacology. These courses are taught on the SJTUSM campus. Upon successful completion of these courses, the students’ final years will be clinical education, and this will take place at the affiliated Renji Hospital in Pudong. The intent is to give the students an excellent medical background, with solid clinical technique, and be fluent in oral and written English upon graduation. Website: http://english.shsmu.edu.cn/
