UN Young Professionals Programme

The United Nations is looking for highly qualified candidates who are ready to launch a professional career as an international civil servant. The young professionals programme (YPP) is a recruitment initiative that brings new talent to the United Nations through an annual entrance examination. This position is located in the Change Management Unit of Umoja in the Department of Management in New York.  The Web Development Intern reports to  Public Information Officer within the Change Management Unit.
The Department of Management/Umoja internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the Office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
               

               
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
The Intern will support technical development and implementation of the Umoja portal, web applications for project collaboration, communications and training management. He/she will be responsible for supporting analysis, design and build of component-based applications in a Web/internet delivery environment, including introduction of an application layer, modeling techniques, component and object-oriented design, and systematic approaches to application integration. Candidates must be familiar with cutting-edge technology and tools in order to carry out the responsibilities outlined above.

Responsibilities will also include the following:
• Application design, software development, maintenance and delivery using Java and/or Ruby.
• Web architecture and Web design functions that will require prior experience with development tools and languages, e.g. Spring, Struts, Hibernate, JDBC, XML, Web Services, SOAP, pJSP, HTML, Javascript, Ajax, JUnit, CVS, Subversion, Jira, MQ, JMS, .NET.
• Working with relational databases (will require prior experience with SQL, Oracle 8i/9i/10g/11g, Postgres or DB2 and strong background working in distributed Unix or Linux environments.
• Designing N-tiered applications, with multi-tier architecture and production Internet architectures.
• Contributing to end-user and GUI development of the website, portal and web-based applications.

Org. Setting and Reporting
The DSPD/Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is offering an internship for two (2) months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department, for the Spring and Summer sessions.
The internship is UNPAID and full‐time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities
Assist the work of the Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in its mandated areas: human rights, economic and social development, environment, education, culture and health. The Forum’s seven socio-cultural regions provide broad representation to the world’s indigenous peoples in Africa; Asia; Central and South America and the Caribbean; the Arctic; Russian Federation, Central and Eastern Europe, Russian Federation, Central Asia and Transcaucasia; North America; and the Pacific.
In order to obtain experience in the areas of work of the Secretariat, the following general responsibilities are allocated:
• Become familiar with the work of the Secretariat by reading documents of the past ten sessions of the UNPFII, Expert meeting reports as well as speaking with staff about their areas of responsibility and regional focus (see website);
• Assist staff in the maintenance and update of the database of Recommendations of the Permanent Forum and of the database of Small Grants Projects under the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues of the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Evaluation of projects when needed;
• Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents;
• Document, legal and internet research to assist staff, including for the compilation of reports as needed;
• Assist staff in the organization of the major meetings organized by the Secretariat, such as the annual Session of the Permanent Forum, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the Expert Group Meetings and others (through note-taking, speaker’s list and side events);
• Translation of speeches, papers, letters and other documents into the languages known/spoken by the candidate;
• Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings concerning the issues dealt by SPFII; and
• Provide administrative support to the Secretariat as required.

The intern will be assigned also to a specific project according to the needs of the Office and depending on the individual’s background.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
• Applicants must be enrolled a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher); or
• If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full‐time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
• Be computer literate in standard software applications.
               
 Work Experience

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme.
