This position is located in the Change Management Unit of
Umoja in the Department of Management in New York. The Web Development Intern reports to Public Information Officer within the Change
Management Unit.
The Department of Management/Umoja internship is for two
months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the Office.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35
hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to
which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
The Intern will support technical development and
implementation of the Umoja portal, web applications for project collaboration,
communications and training management. He/she will be responsible for
supporting analysis, design and build of component-based applications in a
Web/internet delivery environment, including introduction of an application
layer, modeling techniques, component and object-oriented design, and
systematic approaches to application integration. Candidates must be familiar
with cutting-edge technology and tools in order to carry out the
responsibilities outlined above.
Responsibilities will also include the following:
• Application design, software development, maintenance and
delivery using Java and/or Ruby.
• Web architecture and Web design functions that will
require prior experience with development tools and languages, e.g. Spring,
Struts, Hibernate, JDBC, XML, Web Services, SOAP, pJSP, HTML, Javascript, Ajax,
JUnit, CVS, Subversion, Jira, MQ, JMS, .NET.
• Working with relational databases (will require prior
experience with SQL, Oracle 8i/9i/10g/11g, Postgres or DB2 and strong
background working in distributed Unix or Linux environments.
• Designing N-tiered applications, with multi-tier
architecture and production Internet architectures.
• Contributing to end-user and GUI development of the
website, portal and web-based applications.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work
experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United
Nations Secretariat. For this post
fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is
desirable
