Organizational Description
The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is the world's
only foundation solely dedicated to funding LGBTI organizations in both the
United States and internationally. For more than 30 years, Astraea has been
raising funds and distributing grants based on the belief that all people can
participate in the philanthropic process--from giving to grantmaking. Today,
Astraea grantee and donor partners are fueling the movement for social, racial,
economic and
gender justice in villages, cities and towns around the world.

Program Internship
Internships are available in our US Program and our
International Program. The Intern will receive guidance and training on
progressive grantmaking: systems, processes, and program evaluation, as well as
LGBTQ, feminist, and social justice movements in the Global South and
East—especially in the Americas--in the specific tasks assigned. The
internship, though unpaid, is meant to be an important and meaningful learning
experience. The Intern will also receive a mandatory orientation to the
organization, designed to familiarize with the history, values, and programs of
the foundation. Interns can expect to be involved in a variety of aspects of
grantmaking, including:
- Researching
& reporting on conditions experienced by LGBT communities in the
US& internationally;
- Summarizing
proposal highlights for review and write-ups for grants program
publications;
- Synthesizing
grant descriptions for website content edits;
- Coordinating
community briefings by visiting activists;
- Applicant
outreach for arts awards to individual artist & writers;
- Grants
Data Processing related to US, IF panel grant cycles and other special
grantmaking initiatives
- Assisting
in the grants award process;
- Translation
and summarization of inquiry papers and proposals.
- Special
projects as needed
Time Commitment
Internships are ongoing, with a minimum commitment of 3
months. Arrangements can be made to work between 10 to 20 hours per week. We
welcome applications for any start date.
Compensation/Credit
Internship is unpaid. Limited transit stipend via metro
cards is available and is awarded on a
first come first serve basis. School credits are accepted.
