a post-doc researcher who will do independent research in the context of the NWO VIDI Project “Is Poverty Destiny? Exploring long term changes in African living standards in global perspective”. To assess the current opportunities of, and threats to, sustainable development in Africa it is crucial to obtain a better understanding of Africa’s historical development record. The post-doc project aims to explore long term changes in living standards in Southern Africa from the mid-19th century until present, including the development of trade, real income, conditions for rural production and mining activities, as well as the geographical and institutional factors that have affected long term changes in living standards. The research will be conducted under supervision of Professor Ewout Frankema, the chair of the Rural and Environmental History Group. The research is carried out at Wageningen University, and should lead to a number of (joint) international journal articles on specific topics within the overall framework of the project.

We ask
We ask
a scholar with a recently obtained PhD degree in history or (development) economics. He/she should have a keen interest in African and/or global development issues. Fluency in English and good communication skills are essential. Experience with empirical research projects, interdisciplinary research and both quantitative and qualitative research methods is an advantage. Candidates should be prepared to travel to Africa for local archival research.

a 0.8 fte contract for a period of 18 months, extended with another 24 months upon favourable evaluation (a full-time contract for a shorter period is also possible). Gross salary will start in scale 11.0 (€ 3259 at full time conform CAO Dutch Universities) and will be raised with an annual periodic. You will be embedded in a young, dynamic and ambitious research team.
