Department Description
The Primary Physical Standards Department, 2541, as part of the Measurement Standards Program for Sandia, is responsible for the development, calibration and certification of measurement standards for the NNSA.  The department certifies mass, length, temperature, humidity, force, pressure, leaks, vacuum, acceleration, flow, optical and radiation standards. The department closely collaborates with and supports Sandia's advanced manufacturing and production activities.

Job Summary
Performs entry-level work within a science and engineering environment involving assignments that may include assisting with research, application of project design and diagnostics, testing and documentation, development and analysis of technology options, and assembly and troubleshooting.

Job description:

A technical summer student is needed in the Sandia Primary Physical Standards to provide support in the Length/Mass/Force metrology project.  The student is expected to work with two technologists and one engineer.  The student will help with routine calibration work in length, mass, and force metrology, including learning to enter data in the Maximo Calibration Management Software System.  The student will also help with performing calibrations, and help improve calibration procedures, including analysis of measurement uncertainties.  Work will include office work and light laboratory work during core working hours.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
General knowledge of technical principles and processes.
Understanding of the use a variety of research tools.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to contribute in a team environment.
General knowledge of project management.
General knowledge and good understanding of a suite of software, including Microsoft Office.
Required
The successful candidate must meet the following Sandia Student Intern Requirements: Official acceptance into an accredited university's undergraduate program, full-time enrollment during the spring term immediately preceding the internship period (12 credit hours), a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2/4.0, and the ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the internship duration. U.S. citizenship.
Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted L-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
