Cadip - Volunteer Opportunities in Uganda

SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT FOR ORPHANED AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN NORTHERN UGANDA
Gulu District
Volunteer project: The project was established to help address the plight of vulnerable children and the needs of abandoned and orphaned babies who underwent trauma in their young lives. These children are at many times subjects to HIV/AIDS, drug abuse and opportunities for the inhuman child forced labor as well as victims of sexual abuse during the Kony war in the Northern Region. They lack basic necessities food, clothing, shelter and education which is a vital part of their growth in their families necessitated the establishment of this project to assist the children in the process of reconstruction. The project not only offers basic facilities but also offers love and a sense of belonging to the children where the children are brought up in conditions that allow them to bond together and grow up having someone at hand to nurture and guide them. The target group consists of orphaned and vulnerable children.
The work includes social work in the communities where volunteers will be involved in the general care of the children, working in the local school where you will be involved in promotion of the education growth of the children both through classroom work and also practical work, you will also be involved in the children innovation and creativity activities that will also promote the education growth of the children. Volunteers will be involved in helping in organizational duties and home based work within the communities.

Accommodation: The volunteer will live in a host family within the community and this will provide you with the opportunity to learn more from the local people and also share in their daily way of life. Food: the basic meals will be provided in the host family from what is locally available in the local community. Volunteers are therefore advised to be flexible and open minded to be able to integrate freely and easily in the local way of life since there will be no special diets in your host family.
Location: The project is located in northern region which is about eight hours drive from Kampala city.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM IN BUWENGE
Buwenge, Jinja District
Volunteer project: The volunteers will work with a Youth Environmental Protection group that has worked with volunteer groups since the 90s with a common aim of promoting and protecting the Environment in Buwenge Town Council and the country at large. Buwenge is a fast growing urban council and is affected with all the challenges of urbanization and globalization. With the population of Buwenge escalating, the council is facing a problem of waste management and deforestation. In cooperation with the town council and the local community, the volunteers will be looking for a way forward to help the communities of Buwenge cope with pollution, environment degradation and other health hazards. So the town council of Buwenge is looking for motivated volunteers with the skills to guide the council and local communities on waste management and environmental issues.
The volunteers' tasks involve teaching and educational support; guidance and counseling; environmental conservation activities; coordination of club activities; career development.

Accommodation: Since it’s not easy to appreciate and understand cultures before you interact with them and stay together volunteers will be placed in host families. The first two days will be for orientation. Note: We cannot guarantee electricity, water (shower), telephone or wireless network for we work in rural settings, where some of these facilities are not available.
Location: The project is located 102 Km from the city centre of Kampala. From Jinja Town the project is located 20Km off Kamuli Rd in the eastern district of Jinja which is an industrial and tourist attraction.

RESTORATION AND PROTECTION OF THE HISTORIC HERITAGE OF BUGANDA KINGDOM
Central Uganda
Volunteer project: The Buganda kingdom dates 200years back with very rich history and establishment. One of the outstanding treasures of Buganda are the tombs which was declared a world Heritage site by UNESCO. Having experienced a tragedy of the burning down the only Heritage Site of its kind in Uganda, the kingdom is looking for motivated volunteers to help rebuild the former glory of the kingdom by conserving, protecting and promoting the heritage site in all aspects. The volunteers will be partnering with the kingdom to rebuild, restore, and document some of the activities of a two decade legacy.
Volunteer tasks include: restoration, promotion and protection of cultural values and sites; Intercultural exchange; social work; educational support; Guiding and counseling; tree planting.

CAPACITY BUILDING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL COMMUNITIES IN KAYUNGA DISTRICT
Kayunga District
Volunteer project: The project is organised wil a community based organization working in one of the central region district of Uganda (Kayunga district) engaged in environmental and waste management promotion activities. The organization uses the schools to link out with the communities on senitization, advocacy, and mobilization of the communities. The organisation is running a number of projects based on integration of the environment in farming towards sustainable development (Agro-forestry, environment protection)
Volunteers will be involved in Teaching in computer technology; Eco protection; agriculture lessons and practical work; sports and first aid programs; capacity building and resource mobilization.

Location: Kayunga district borders Jinja and Kamuli in the east, Luweero and Nakasongola in the west, Lira in the north, Mukono in the south, located 85 km from Kampala central, the project is located in Nazigo and Kayunga sub county which is 7Km from Kayunga town. The site is located in the central region of Uganda which is surrounding the capital city.

SUPPORT THE INCOME GENERATION ACTIVITIES OF WOMEN IN KABAROLE DISTRICT
Kabarole District
Volunteer project: The project is located in Kabarole district which was part of the Toro Kingdom; it became a district in 1980. The district is bordered by Bundibugyo in the west and north, Kasese in the south, Kamwenge and Kyenjojo in the east. The project was started by community women who formed an association to generate income within their homesteads as a result of exploiting the developing tourism industry in the region. Mt Ruwenzori is seen within the vicinity, as well as other natural settings like Queen Elizabeth national park.
The volunteers will support the income generation activities of the women. The aim of the project is to help families to improve their households by selling crafts and processing locally available fruits. This would help young women live their life to full potential.

NATURE CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN MOUNTAIN ELGON
Eastern Uganda
Volunteer project: The project, which takes into account the importance given by the European Commission and the UN to Gender Equality as a prerequisite to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and build sustainable societies, is the first Concrete outcome of the Africa-Europe project “Culture meets Concepts”, which took place during the year 2009. The project aims at exploring conservation, gender roles in the eastern region societies and linking the general reflections on gender sensitivity to the participation of young women and men in international voluntary service projects and their interaction in diverse cultural contexts and conservation. The wide range of field projects, while practically addressing key development issues and national priorities – from education to climate change, from HIV prevention to youth and women employment – will thus see a progressive introduction of the gender perspective, and generate productive exchanges and learning processes on this topic for both the volunteers and the hosting communities.

HELP INVOLVE THE LOCAL POPULATION IN THE ECO-TOURIST DEVELOPMENT OF RUWENZORI REGION OF UGANDA
Eastern Uganda
Volunteer project: This is a project promoting eco-tourism issues among the communities of the Ruwenzori region of Uganda. The region is covered partially by the Rift Valley and the foots of Mt. Ruwenzori and Queen Elizabeth National Park with a lot of land mismanagement, income is too low. It's one of the tourist hubs of Uganda yet the population is not benefitting anything. This project was created to mobilize, educate and map out mutual strategies of co-existence. So the communities are spearheading it by encouraging the indigenous people to develop activities and variables which they can sell to the visiting tourists thereby improving their conditions of living. The setting has very beautiful sceneries which are naturally gifted. So we are partnering with communities in this area to improve on their income
and living conditions and awareness of the population.

REHABILITATION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF WAR AFFECTED COMMUNITIES IN NORTHERN UGANDA
Northern Uganda
Volunteer project: The programme is a partnership local organisations and government to rehabilitate the affected communities of the northern region. The area was badly affected by the Kony war of the past decades. Now the area is secure, reconstruction and settlement of those affected is ongoing. But the major challenges are social services of the area which went down. The population is traumatized, without proper accommodation, sanitation and beddings. International volunteers will join the efforts to uplift the service delivery of the returnees and the affected population of the north.
Topics of discussion during the project will be how to take advantage and deepen the chances for intercultural learning and the transformation of conflicts related to international voluntary service.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR YOUTH
Kampala
Volunteer project: Wakiso community polytechnic was started to help unemployed youth to acquire vocational skills. The economy of Uganda is experiencing a gap of 10 engineers to 1 mason so with the advocacy of technical, vocational training policy the need for training institutions arise and now Wakiso community polytechnic is overwhelmed by applicants to join but the manpower and training kits are not enough. In order to support the education process, the polytechnic is seeking motivated volunteers, with vocational skills, to help and reduce the workload in form of training assistants and any other specialized trainers.
Bolunteers are needed to provide educational support in handicraft, mechanic, driving; mentoring the youth; sports and extra – curricular activities; career development;
capacity building and resource mobilization.

HELP IMPROVE THE CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT AND SUPPORT THE HEALTH CARE SERVICES AT KAYUNGA DISTRICT HOSPITAL
Kayunga District
Volunteer project: Kayunga District Hospital is a government facility in a proper location, proper setting but not able to deliver yet all the needed services. The communities around it are desperate for basic/quality health services. The district is running a project on the mitigation of HIV/AIDS in the country but with minimal resources especially personnel; the other areas are neglected and left unattended to. The medical supretendant in his effort to strengthen service delivery is seeking the support and attention of all well wishers and motivated volunteers to come to their rescue and support the poorer communities of Kayunga district to get access to basic health services.
Volunteers' help is needed in strengthening the capacity of essential health systems; supporting a wide range of activities, for example, training health workers; training the trainers; improving the clinical environment; supporting mutual learning, helping to inform the development of good practice.
