Volunteer: US Nurse Volunteers in Vijayawada, India

Recruiting US nurse volunteers to teach, train, build capacity and help strengthen the health care system in Andrej Pradesh, India at two sites: the NRI Academy of Sciences and the ASRAM Medical College Hospital


Overview of NRI: The NRI Academy is a combined hospital, medical college, and nursing school with a 750 bed capacity and a full range of services, set in an urban environment. The main objective of NRI is to promote the best in medical education and to produce professionals with global standards while providing affordable health care to the needy people of the society on non-profit basis with state of art facilities and modern medical equipment. The mission statement is to educate the physician, nurse, and medical scientist workforce, to discover new medical knowledge, to develop innovative technologies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and to provide health care services in academic settings at an affordable cost. The goal is to produce physicians and nurses who are prepared to serve the fundamental purposes of medicine.

Overview of ASRAM: The Alluri Sitaramaraju Academy of Medical Sciences (ASRAM) is also a combined hospital, medical college, and nursing school with a 910 bed capacity, 130 intensive care beds, and 100 super specialty beds, with a full range of services. ASRAM was named after the famous patriot, Alluri Sitaramaraju. The Medical College and the attached Teaching Hospital were established in 1999 as a non-profit society. Within a span of just ten years, the ASRAM Medical College has emerged as a pioneering Medical College with excellent teaching and research facilities in Coastal Andhra Pradesh. It is now the first choice for many young aspiring doctors. The attached teaching Hospital serves the needs of sick patients belonging to the West Godavari district and the neighboring districts of East Godavari, Khammam and Krishna.

Mission: Project HOPE is looking to deploy clinical nurse volunteers to support the NRI and ASRAM hospitals.

Location: Both sites are in the vicinity of Vijayawada, India in the state of Andrej Pradesh.

Needs and Requirements: Project HOPE is looking for volunteers for each of the locations, with a mix of nursing specialties. Departments within the hospitals include: general medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging, psychiatry, dermatology, OB-GYN, anesthesia, ENT, physiotherapy, hematology, laboratory, dental, along with a host of specialties, as well as both medical and nursing schools.

Funded Global Health Volunteer Service Corps Program: We are also accepting applications for volunteers interested in volunteering for longer periods (6 months or longer) to provide continuity in volunteer operations over the course of the deployment; to work in technical areas within the program; to assist the program with identifying new opportunities for growth and development; to help measure impacts and effectiveness; and to act as the lead agent for managing and overseeing volunteer team deployments throughout the year. This volunteer should have a clinical healthcare background with public/community health experience. General Scope of Work: Once teams are established, specific goals and objectives will be developed to meet the needs of the hospitals and communities while engaging the specific skills of the volunteer team. In either location, you will be assigned to your designated specialty area. You will have a variety of opportunities, from participating in counterpart educational exchange to teaching nursing students as a guest lecturer, to learning in a professional clinical setting. Every volunteer will be assigned a faculty supervisor to assist in on-site integration and program planning. You will be able to speak with your department chief prior to arrival to discuss the details of your work plan.

Applicants must have, at a minimum:
• US citizenship
• Required licensure and proof of diplomas, certifications, and letter of good standing/competency
• Possess excellent oral and written English abilities
• Ability to fund deployment (see Expenses below)
• Agree to deploy for a minimum of three weeks

Applicants are recommended to have:
• A passion for training and teaching
• Strong interest in India

Additional Information:
1) No language fluency requirements beyond English required.
2) Room and board will be at the on-campus dormitories. Rooms vary in amenities and are gender-segregated. All rooms will have A/C and wireless Internet connectivity.
3) Each volunteer team will be assigned a previous volunteer as a Mentor. Contact information will be given to the team, once applied and approved. Current Mentors:

Visa Requirement: YES

Malaria Prophylaxis Requirement: YES

Vaccine Recommendations: MMR, DPT, Polio, Hep A, Hep B, and Typhoid

Expenses:
1) The volunteer must cover the cost of international airfare.
2) The volunteer must cover the cost of the visa. A visa is required and there is no Visa on Arrival (VOA) option for US citizens.
3) The volunteer would be responsible for obtaining temporary traveler’s health insurance.
4) NRI will provide the volunteer with room and board at no cost.
5) ASRAM requires $150 per person per rotation for room and board.
6) NRI/ASRAM will provide airport transfers to/from airport and campus at no cost.
7) Project HOPE will provide worker’s compensation, medical malpractice insurance, and evacuation insurance.
