Kiswahili and English are spoken in the central business area and Government offices, and are popular among the young professionals.
Kisumu city has an estimated population of 300,000, most of them with certain education level, therefore making it easier to teach basic life saving skills and sorting out ways of fighting poverty within the area. Economically the Luos are fishermen and farmers, but the rate of poverty is high because of lack of water distribution.

PEACE BUILDING AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN NAKURU
Nakuru, Rift Valley province

The association was founded out of the concern that the intermittent conflicts that were rocking various parts of the country, specifically Rift Valley, would obliterate the whole society.
This prompted the establishment of the association to provide an alternative way of dispute handling. Through Conflict Resolution Education, the association has been a strong advocate of the revitalization or re-discovery of the Traditional African Principles of Conflict Resolution. This is fortified by the fact that these mechanisms are home grown, cost effective, inclusive and involve consensus building. The traditional African Structures are a wealth of knowledge of African ethos that is pertinent in the provision of efficacious solutions to the conflicts that have plagued the African Continent. The African principles of dispute handling are consistent with the Centre’s clarion "Peace building from below".
