Volunteer Opportunities in Peru

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES IN PALCA
Palca          1 - 12 months
Volunteer project: The volunteers will support the community of Palca in various youth development projects, health, non-formal education, income generation, art and cultural activities, sport and recreation. They will work with local children, youth, seniors and/or people with disabilities. 
The volunteers will participate in various activities, according to their skills, experiences and interests:
- They will join young entrepreneurs from the community and help them in the production of yogurt, jam, and cream. The goal is this to be developed as a source of income for the local young people.
- Academic activities, such as strengthening of some educational subjects.
- Implementing and developing various workshops with the girls which will raise their spirit of initiative and creativity; supporting the workshops of sewing, weaving, painting.
- Art and recreational activities such as sport, music, dance, handcrafts.
The volunteers are going to work every day from Monday to Friday, except on weekends when they will have free time.
Special requirements: The volunteers should have basic knowledge of Spanish. Motivation, adaptation, teamwork required.
Language: English / Spanish
Duration of the project: The project is open throughout the whole year and volunteers can stay from 1 to 12 months.
Accommodation: The volunteer(s) will live in the house of a family in Pachacamac with the basic services provided. 
Location: Palca is located in the Andes at 2,739 m above sea level, 20 kilometers from the province of Tarma, with a population of about 7,698. The main activity of the people is agriculture and livestock. Most families work in their own businesses (farms or shops). Most homes are in the rural area, within the district of Palca and its annexes. This district has 47 annexes. People in the community are welcoming, which shows in the care they provide to visitors.
There's basic services of water and electricity in this community. The only access is by road. There's also mobile phone service and internet.

Participation fee: $590 CAD
Extra fee: 370 Euro for 4 weeks; each additional week is 65 Euro
The extra fee is intended to support the hosting organization who does not have sufficient funds. It is due upon arrival on the project.

A WAY OUT FOR ABUSED GIRLS
Lurin          1 - 6 months
Volunteer project: This project will be carried out in support of a social home for girls in the town of Lurin, Lima province. It is a home to 45 girls between 2 and 15 years of age who have been victims of sexual and physical abuse. The project aims to strengthen and promote the comprehensive development of children and adolescents at risk, conducting educational workshops and recreational activities to help them overcome the consequences of violence they have experienced in their homes. In this project, volunteers will implement their high sense of service, strengthening the shortcomings of values, self esteem, and desire to overcome the past in these girls and teenagers. This will be done through games, dynamic educational lectures, school support in order to increase young people’s motivation levels.
All the girls need the volunteers' affection, interest and much enthusiasm. Depending on each individual situation they have been through, we will have to help them regain trust in others, catch up at school and learn to play and interact with other children. In sum, volunteers are needed to offer these girls a way out of their troubled personal situation. 
The volunteers will conduct various activities according to their skills, experiences and interests, under the frame of the program activities of the institution. Those can be for example:
- Academic activities, such as strengthening of some educational subjects and teaching computer skills
- Developing and implementing various workshops with the girls that will raise their spirit of initiative and creativity
- Support in the sewing, weaving and painting workshops
- Sports activities
- Recreational activities such as music, dance, handicrafts
The volunteers will work every day from Monday to Friday with a total of 45 girls, except on weekends when they will have free time.
Special requirements: The volunteers should have basic knowledge of Spanish.
Language: English / Spanish

Accommodation: The volunteer(s) will live in the house of a host family with the basic services provided.
Location: Lurin, the ecological town, is situated at 36 km south of the historical centre of Lima. From very ancient times this was an area of agriculture and fishing. It is also famous for the very advanced culture that developed here, characterised by its magic-religious features.

HELP STREET CHILDREN UNLOCK THEIR POTENTIAL AND BUILD A BETTER FUTURE
Huanuco          3+ months
Volunteer project: The project is developed in three urban areas of Huanuco with young children who live in extreme poverty and who are involved since tender age in the worst forms of child labour, exposed to various types of abuse and excluded of their basic right to education. With this project, the volunteers will be able to put in practice their spirit of service, working to oppose the children’s lack of values, and to increase their self-esteem and their will to improve their lives. All this will be done through a range of educational games, talks, and school support, everything intending to motivate the children.
With this project we aim to contribute to the overall development of the working street children and adolescents, through a non-formal educational process, applied by the so-called “Street Educators”. Through it, the children based in the areas of intervention, in particular those living under conditions of poverty and socio-cultural marginalisation, may be able to have access to all their rights, mainly the right to free education. 
Volunteer tasks and role:
- Academic activities, such as support in certain school subjects.
- Implementing and developing various types of workshops that can develop the children’s initiative and creativity.
- Recreational activities, such as sports, music, dance and handcrafts.
The volunteers will work from Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 1.30pm and from 3:00pm to 5:30pm.
Special requirements: Empathy with the environment you are in. Ability to work in teams. Easy to interact with children. Experiences in artistic and cultural activities (dance, music, theatre, etc.). Spanish intermediate level required.
Language: English / Spanish
Duration of the project: The project is open throughout the whole year and the minimum commitment required is 3 months.
Accommodation: The volunteer(s) will live in the house of a host family with the basic services provided.
Location: Huanuco is a historical city situated in central Peru, 1939 metres above sea level. It has all the services of a modern city and it counts with a spring-like climate during the whole year.
