Volunteer: Nursing Education Guest Professor, Project HOPE Wuhan Office, China


Recruiting qualified Master’s Degree or PhD-level Nurses to teach undergraduate nursing students in the International BSN Nursing program at the Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing 


Background: Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing was co-established by Project HOPE and Wuhan University in 2002. In the past ten years, HOPE has assisted the School of Nursing on curriculum reform for the baccalaureate nursing program and established Master and PhD programs in nursing. HOPE School of Nursing has become one of the leading nursing schools in China. In September 2011, Wuhan University approved the proposal for the nursing school to initiate an International BSN Nursing Program. The long-term goal of the school is to become the best nursing school in China while meeting the international nursing education standard. In order to achieve this goal, the nursing school needs to further develop its capacity, improve nursing education quality, and strengthen international exchanges. To that end, Project HOPE will mobilize US volunteer nurses to help the development and advancement of the Nursing School at the undergraduate level.

Mission: Project HOPE is recruiting qualified Master’s level (or higher) nurses to teach undergraduate nursing students in the International BSN Nursing program at the Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing.

Goals and Objectives:

1) To improve teaching and research capacities of the HOPE School of Nursing, including evidence-based research.

2) To strengthen the International Nursing Program in the fields of maternity, pediatrics, nursing management, community nursing, and psychiatry.

3) To promote new teaching methodologies including simulation laboratory education, interactive teaching, and concept teaching within the nursing programs.

4) To enhance clinical practices of nursing students in the areas of community-based elderly care, rehabilitation, and chronic disease management.

Scope of Work:

1) To assist the nursing school in evaluating the current program and compare that with the international accreditation standard to identify the areas that need to be improved,
and assist with the development plan.

2) To train and mentor nursing faculty in research, simulation education, and other subject areas.

3) To participate in the teaching of the International Nursing Program and demonstrate new teaching methodologies with more interactive teaching and concept teaching.

4) To facilitate nursing research within the nursing school by organizing research seminars, assisting with research proposal writing, and reviewing faculty and graduate students’ proposals and theses.

5) To assist faculty members and graduate students with information sharing and international publications.

6) To conduct workshops for clinical nurses in critical care, maternity, psychiatry, pediatrics, and nursing management.

7) To conduct workshops for community healthcare workers on chronic disease management, elderly care, rehabilitation, mental health, and case management.

Location: Wuhan, China

Needs and Requirements: Project HOPE is looking for 1-2 volunteers per semester. Nursing specialties requested are in maternity, pediatrics, nursing management, community nursing, rehabilitation, critical care, and psychiatry.

Spring Semester: Mid-February 2013 through end of June 2013
Fall Semester: Mid-August 2013 through mid-January 2014

Applicants must have, at a minimum:

• Master’s Degree or PhD in Nursing or related field

• More than five years of working experience

• Be willing to commit to a full semester of 5-6 months

• Current passport with at least 6 months validity from the expected date of return

Applicants are recommended to have:

• A passion for education and teaching – faculty should be motivated to educate students and be willing to share their educational experiences for the improvement and enhancement of the program

• Experience in educational research and be able to provide suitable educational materials and use appropriate teaching methodologies

• Strong interest in China

Additional Information:

1) Chinese fluency is NOT required. Only a strong command of the English language is needed.

2) All positions will have an assigned faculty supervisor.

Vaccine Recommendations: MMR, DPT, Polio, Hep A, Hep B, and Typhoid

Expenses:

1) The Wuhan Nursing School will fund one economy-class roundtrip ticket.

2) Wuhan will also provide free on-campus lodging at the International House. This will be a private room, with a full bath, bed, TV, A/C, and a LAN Internet connection.

3) Wuhan will provide a monthly stipend of RMB4,000 to cover meals, local transportation, and incidentals.

4) Wuhan will provide office space at the Nursing School, with access to wifi Internet and printers.

5) Project HOPE-Wuhan will provide free airport transfers.

6) Project HOPE headquarters will provide all volunteers medical liability insurance, evacuation insurance, and worker’s compensation benefits.

7) The volunteer would be responsible for acquiring the visa for entry into China.

8) The volunteer would be responsible for obtaining temporary traveler’s health insurance.
