Volunteer: San Da School of Nursing, Shanghai

Recruiting qualified Master’s Degree or PhD-level Nurses to teach undergraduate nursing students in the BSN Nursing program at the San Da School of Nursing


Background: San Da University School of Nursing (BSN four-year program) was founded in 2011. The Project HOPE Program Director for Project HOPE-Shanghai is also the Director for the San Da Nursing School. The long-term goal of the school is to become the best nursing school in China while meeting the international nursing education standard. In order to achieve this goal, the nursing school needs to further develop its capacity, improve nursing education quality, and strengthen international exchanges. To that end, Project HOPE will mobilize US volunteer nurse faculty to help the development and advancement of the Nursing School.

Mission: Project HOPE is recruiting qualified Master’s level (or higher) nurses to teach undergraduate nursing students in the BSN Nursing program at the San Da University School of Nursing.

Goals and Objectives:

1) To improve teaching and simulation laboratory utilization at the School of Nursing,

2) To strengthen the BSN Nursing Program in the fields of patient assessment, maternity, pediatrics, mental health, and community nursing.

3) To promote new teaching methodologies including simulation laboratory education, interactive teaching, and concept teaching within the nursing programs.

4) To enhance clinical practices of nursing students in the areas of community-based elderly care, rehabilitation, and chronic disease management.

Scope of Work:

1) To assist the nursing school in evaluating the current program and compare that with the international accreditation standards to identify the areas that need to be improved, and assist with the development plan.

2) To train and mentor nursing faculty in simulation education and other subject areas.

3) To participate in the teaching of the BSN Nursing Program and demonstrate new teaching methodologies with more interactive teaching and concept teaching.

4) To assist faculty members with information sharing and international publications.

5) To conduct workshops and provide lectures to strengthen the clinical nursing faculty development.

Location: Shanghai, China

Needs and Requirements: Project HOPE is looking for 1 volunteer per semester. Nursing specialties requested are in maternity, pediatrics, community nursing, mental health, rehabilitation, and critical care. Initially, we will be looking to assist in the Health Assessment course and then follow-on nursing specialty courses in pediatric, maternal, community health, or mental health.

Spring Semester: Mid-February 2013 through end of June 2013
Fall Semester: Mid-August 2013 through mid-January 2014

Applicants must have, at a minimum:

• Master’s Degree or PhD in Nursing or related field

• A minimum of two years of nursing education-related working experience

• Participate for a minimum of 4 weeks; we encourage a full semester, if possible

• Current passport with at least 6 months validity from the expected date of return

Applicants are recommended to have:

• A passion for education and teaching – faculty should be motivated to educate students and be willing to share their educational experiences for the improvement and enhancement of the program

• Experience in educational research and be able to provide suitable educational materials and use appropriate teaching methodologies

• Strong interest in China

Additional Information:

1) Chinese fluency is NOT required. Only a strong command of the English language is needed.

2) All positions will have an assigned faculty supervisor.

Expenses:
1) The volunteer is responsible for the international roundtrip airline ticket. San Da University will fund the airline ticket if the volunteer can commit to a minimum of one full semester.

2) San Da University will provide free on-campus lodging at the faculty dormitory. This will be a private room, with a full bath, bed, TV, A/C, and a LAN Internet connection.

3) San Da will provide three meals per day, at no expense to the volunteer, at the faculty cafeteria, located inside the faculty dormitory.

4) San Da will provide office space at the Nursing School, with access to the Internet and printers.

5) San Da University will provide a stipend of 2,000 RMB per month to the volunteer for incidentals.

6) Project HOPE-Shanghai staff will provide free airport transfers on arrival and departure.

7) Project HOPE headquarters will provide all volunteers medical liability insurance, evacuation insurance, and worker’s compensation benefits.

8) The volunteer would be responsible for acquiring the visa for entry into China.

9) The volunteer would be responsible for obtaining temporary traveler’s health insurance.

Vaccine Recommendations: MMR, DPT, Polio, Hep A, Hep B, and Typhoid
