Volunteer project: Semarang is capital city of
Central Java. It is located on the northern coast of Java bordered with Java
Sea. The area is divided into coastal and hilly part. Coastal part is home for
industrial business and main shipping port for Central Java province. Many
small manufactures are located in Semarang. Nevertheless, cultural heritage
from colonial times are found in here. Kota Lama or Old town is an area where
it feels like in Europe. There is a lot of European architecture being
preserved in here.
Semarang High School Project is combination between some
high schools in Semarang. They are SMP 3 Semarang, SMA 7 Semarang, SMA 8
Semarang and SMA Ksatrian. Those schools are located in suburban area of
Semarang. The students are from 12 – 18 years old. The educational system is
divided into 3 grades such as grade VII, VII, IX for Junior High School
students and X, XI, XII for Senior High School students. The grading system is
based on the student’s ability and their age. In those school, the students
learn compulsory subject such as science, math, language, social, art etc.
Besides that they are recommended to choose one of extracurricular activities.
The presences of the volunteers is appreciated by the school community in order
to motivate the student in actively using their foreign language. Furthermore,
interaction between the students and volunteer can enhance their cultural
knowledge and experience.
The role of the volunteer will be assisting local teacher in
holding English language classes. The volunteer will motivate and encourage the
children to practice the foreign laguage they are learning. Intercultural
learning activities in the form of dialogue, music and games could give the
students a better understanding of other countries and cultures.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced
to the Indonesian culture and customs in general, with a special focus on the
Javanese particularities. Some cultural visits are also foreseen.
Leisure time: During free time, the volunteers
will have the chance to visit Semarang city, Samp Poo Kong Chinese Temple,
LawangSewu Building and GedongSongo Hindus Temples.
Language: English
Duration of the project: Placements are from 1
to 3 months.
Accommodation: The accommodation and food is
provided by a local host family. The volunteer will share his/her room and the
other facilities with the host family members. Facilities are simple and
Indonesian style.

people. It is located 400 km east of Jakarta (the capital city of Indonesia).

Participation fee: $590 CAD
Extra fee: 200 € or 2.600.000 IDR/month
The extra fee is intended to support the hosting
organization who does not have sufficient funds. It is due upon arrival on the
project.

Volunteer project: Islamic boarding school is
well known in Indonesia as “Madrasah”. “Madrasah” is educational institution in
which Islamic knowledge is taught. “Madrasah” appears as educational
institution which combines compulsory education and religious education. The
establishment of “Madrasah” is sponsored by local people through community
foundation. Islamic boarding school is normally started from Junior and Senior
High School level. All the students are required to stay in the boarding school
in the school days. Normally Friday is free day for them, where they can return
to their home as they wish. In “Madrasah”, they are learning compulsory
education in the morning and religious practice in the evening. There are 2
Islamic boarding schools which are eager to incorporate voluntary service
activities with their academic activities. They would like to invite volunteers
in order to widen their knowledge about another country and culture. Besides
that the volunteer interaction with the students can be of great benefit in
order to emerge intercultural learning, mutual understanding and international
friendship.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher
in classes like teaching basic conversational English, helping teachers in
giving training. Moreover, the volunteers are expected to boost students'
motivation for practicing their English skills. In addition, intercultural
learning activities such as song, arts or music will be very much welcomed.
