Access is an international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world. With offices in Brussels, New York, Santiago, Tunis, and Washington we combine innovative policy, user engagement, and direct technical support, and work globally with activists, civil society, and policymakers to build technical capacity and advocate for open and secure communications for all.

Advocacy Arm and the Communications Internship

The Communications and Social Media intern will join the Advocacy arm and work closely with our Director of Communications and our Digital Engagement Manager, who’ll provide the guidance that will enable you to make the

most out of your time working on one of today’s most pressing human rights challenges. You’ll be at the forefront of our efforts to advocate and strengthen the realization of digital rights, the importance of free expression and an accessible internet... reaching millions while you do it!

You’ll be creatively engaging and expanding our action-focused global movement of 400,000 users from over 185 countries as we seek to affect change to ensure that real people everywhere have the ability to freely, fully, and safely participate online!

To do this, you’ll learn and do many things, such as:

• Develop and help execute clever marketing campaigns and innovative digital strategies 
• Create compelling content and craft campaign texts to be used on Access’ website 
• Help run and organize our social media accounts! 
• Analyse data and conduct research 
• Review, edit and update blogs and online materials 
• Identify outreach and engagement opportunities 
• Creatively support the growth of our online community 
• Create videos, images, templates, and other materials for our web sites. 
• Work closely with our Technology and Policy arms 
• Create a really really funny meme-lol for our meme wall 
• Participate in team meetings 

Qualifications

The communications and social media intern is someone who loves the internet. They’re outgoing and able to immediately plug-in to our system and network, someone who speaks in tweets and can think creatively, strategically and analytically. This internship is actively involved in crafting Access’ message applicants must have strong writing and editing skills, be interested in technology and human rights, and knows the difference between gifs, memes and vines, and knows how to choose the best instagram filter on a rainy day.

Being well organized, motivated, and reliable will also help your application, as will proven research and writing skills and fluency in a foreign language, but if you only speak English, that’s fine too.

We’re looking for students or recent graduates in communications and media, journalism, international relations, politics or policy, human rights or a related field.

The Engagement team are based in Washington DC but we’ve also got a wonderful office in New York City. The intern can work from either amazing office. However, due to our love of the Internet, we’re happy to talk virtually and applicants will be considered from locations worldwide.

Time Commitment

• One full academic term (usually 3 to 4 months) 
• 16-20 hours per week, more if you like, that’s fine! 
• Start ASAP!
• Unpaid position, academic credit available,.
