Human Rights Research and Advocacy Intern

Founded in 2008, the La Isla Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to tackle Chronic Kidney Disease amongst sugar cane workers in Western Nicaragua through innovative and cross-disciplinary initiatives in the provision of direct services, advocacy, research, and outreach.


Position Summary
The La Isla Foundation is seeking a passionate, energetic, and driven intern to support our Legal Team. The intern will provide legal assistance in the areas of research and analysis for the human rights studies, capacity development tools, and adhoc legal projects.

Key Responsibilities
· Research and analyze domestic, regional, and international laws related to human rights, labor, public health, and social protection issues
· Contribute to the design and distribution of educational and outreach materials for affected populations
· Provide support for community based initiatives on rights protection rights based education
· Provide translation assistance to members of the legal team and locally-based advocates
· Proofread and edit documents in English and Spanish for relevance and accuracy
· Work closely with members of the Public Health and Community Outreach teams to ensure research and advocacy efforts are targeted, informed, and coordinated.

How to apply:
Required Qualifications
· Currently enrolled in graduate study or have recently obtained a graduate degree in law, human rights, international relations, or similar area of study
· Demonstrated familiarity with human rights principles, labor law, and development issues
· Legal research experience
· Professional-level proficiency in Spanish
· Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite. Strong written and oral communication skills
· Experience conducting human rights interviews and working directly with affected populations

Internship Conditions
Legal interns will not be remunerated and are expected to provide funding to support themselves. However, they will receive guidance, mentorship, and a letter of recommendation upon completion of their service.
