Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. 
Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. 
Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Special Advisor, Policy and Programme, the intern will assist the Policy and Programme Directorate by: conducting research; drafting substantive inputs; supporting internal and external communications; and assisting in the overall coordination of the work of the Deputy Executive Director.    A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support and assist the Office of the Deputy Executive Director in managing the DED’s agenda and keeping track of important events, meetings, including through background research on events and invitations addressed to the DED;
  • Support the Office of the DED in the review of incoming and outgoing correspondence and refer it to appropriate units/officers;
  • Undertake research as required, for papers and analytical studies on policy issues pertaining to women’s rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment;
  • Define architecture and nomenclature of shared drive system for the Directorate; support its population with strategic and updated documents.

Required Skills and Experience
Educational requirement:
  •  Undertaking a Master’s in in International Affairs, Law, Social Sciences, Economic and Political Development, and/or a closely related discipline; gender studies an asset.
Language requirement:
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required; 
  • Working knowledge of other UN official language will be an asset.
Experience:
  • Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and in handling web-based information/management systems.
Learning Elements:
  • Increased understanding of UN Women’s work and the UN system
  • Learning different aspects of work in a Directorate, with a specific focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment, within the UN System and in an international environment
  • Meeting and networking with UN Women colleagues in other units

  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan.
