            ISOS emergency medical evacuation coverage
            Local transport and accommodations for work-related travel
            Office space and use of office equipment, such as printer and scanner.

Intern responsibilities
Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:
            Visa fees
            Accommodation
            Living costs
            Flights and Transport
            Medical Insurance
            All other costs associated with this internship


PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mercy Corps Indonesia’s goal is to address the root causes of poverty, thereby improving the quality of life for disaster and conflict affected, urban, and coastal communities.

Following several years of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) interventions in Sumatra, Mercy Corps is now beginning the implementation of an 18 month USAID/OFDA-funded project called “Resilient Environment through Active DRR Initiatives” (READI).  The objective is to assist the people of Sumatra to improve resilience and capacity to cope with recurring natural hazards.  The READI program addresses resilience in the most populated coastal communities of Sumatra (Bengkulu, Padang, Meulaboh, Nias and Mentawai districts) and views resilience as the capacity of households, communities and institutions to reduce the likelihood and mitigate the impact of natural hazards, as well as their capacity to take swift action should a disaster occur.

The objective of this project is to implement interventions that contributes to saving lives, alleviating suffering, and reducing the economic impact of future disasters by building local capacity for disaster management, increasing risk and mitigation awareness, and improving early warning systems.  Specifically, Mercy Corps will intervene in the following areas:
  • Awareness Campaign  and Pro-active Engagement,
  • Evacuation Maps,
  • Capacity Building,
  • Tsunami Vertical Shelter,
  • Enhanced Emergency Information System (Emergency Masts),
  • AM/FM Emergency Radio Broadcasting, and
  • Partnership with private and public sector, and civil society.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this placement, the intern will:
  • Be able to conduct program specific gender analysis which can be adapted to inform program development.
  • Gain practical knowledge in building capacity for vulnerable groups.
  • Gain practical knowledge of best practices in Disaster Risk Reduction interventions within the context of an international relief and development agency.

DELIVERABLES: The Gender Intern will assist the READI team in gender mainstreaming to program interventions and developing a strategy to build capacity among Mercy Corps staff and vulnerable community. To that end, the intern will assist the program team in the following activities:

  • Research major issues and gender gaps faced by the vulnerable community groups, including potential barriers on DRR acitivities.
  • Research existing capacity building initiatives related to vulnerable community groups within the program framework.
  • Provide recommendations for improvements in gender mainstreaming to future capacity building activities.
  • Design implementation of Training of Trainer to partners / staff in conducting training for vulnerable community groups.
  • Support “Training of Trainers” for partner staff who will deliver training to beneficiaries.
  • Develop an outline for program evaluation strategy with gender perspective and to understand;
    • Which capacity building activities provided benefits, and why or why not?
    • What benefits were received from the capacity building activities?
    • Pilot a survey instrument and focus group discussion guide in coordination with the Team Leader and Program Officers.
    • Survey report.

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MA in International Development or a related field completed or in process.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with vulnerable groups, community development, program/needs assessment or a related field.
  • Experience conducting capacity building assessments, developing questionnaires, conducting interviews and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Proficiency in English required
  • Proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia is desirable

LIVING CONDITIONS:
The intern will be based in Padang City, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia.  The population of Padang City is estimated at 847,567 (2011), with density 1220 people/km2. Padang City has various high hilly areas ranging from 0 to- 1,853 m above sea level. The temperature is quite high between 22-32°C with the humidity between 77-94%. The volume average of rain fall is about 290 mm/month and the average number of rainy day is 15 days/month.

Main food is rice and most of local restaurants offer cuisine with spicy seasonings. But many food choices exist, both with national menus or fast food restaurants.
Mercy Corps interns and volunteers represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
