Description

FINCA International, one of the world's leading microfinance institutions, provides financial services to more than 950,000 clients through 21 subsidiaries in Africa, Eurasia, Latin America and the Greater Middle East. FINCA is currently seeking a Strategic Initiatives Intern to work within the New Business Development department. The SI intern will support business plan development and the implementation of new products and services. He/she will also monitor activities ensuring that program deliverables are produced on time and within established budgets. Content areas are likely to include: savings, financial literacy and delivery channels. The SI Intern will also have the opportunity to work on other priority initiatives as assigned.
 Specifically, the SI intern will:
  • Support FINCA in the evaluation of opportunities to develop and offer new products;
  • Devise business models for the opportunity assessment of strategic initiatives, showing expected results, revenue generation and/or contribution to FINCA’s bottom line, operating structure, and implementation plan;
  • Prepare business plans for alliances as needed, assist in negotiating with strategic partners, and ensure that alliances are formalized appropriately, through appropriate legal vehicles.
  • Identify the inputs needed to implement each initiative, including financial requirements, equipment, human resources, and capacity;
  • Support the SI team in positioning FINCA relevant constituencies and source the needed inputs for the implementation of the project;
  • Develop project work plans and budgets as needed and ensure compliance with them and track budget variances to ensure that these are within acceptable limits;
  • Evaluate the project’s performance with respect to its original objectives, as needed and identify success factors and constraints for internal dissemination, and prepare reports;
  • Ensure that all grants for projects are properly managed and will ensure that all programmatic and financial reporting requirements are met on-time;
*Note that this is an unpaid internship with a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week for 10 weeks or more. Summer Intern will ideally start May/June 2013*

Ideal profile:
  • MBA or Master’s Degree in relevant field;
  • Knowledge of microfinance products and services with experience in a structured new product; development process preferred;
  • Project management experience;
  • Experience in business plan development and proposal writing;
  • Exceptional financial planning and monitoring skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Advanced computer skills (Excel and PowerPoint required, Visio and Microsoft Project a plus);
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task and complete projects by deadline with keen attention to detail;
  • Self-motivated, able to successfully complete tasks with minimal supervision;
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills in English required, second language (Spanish, French or Russian) desirable; 
  • Coursework in: microfinance, international development, financial planning, monitoring & evaluation and project management provide solid background for this position.
  • Preference given to candidates that can commit to longer periods of time (at least 6 months).
