Background

The mission of the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) is to advance human development. The goal is to contribute towards the expansion of opportunities, choice and freedom. HDRO works towards this goal by promoting innovative new ideas, advocating practical policy changes, and constructively challenging policies and approaches that constrain human development. HDRO works with others to achieve change through writing and research, data analysis and presentation, support to national and regional reports and outreach and advocacy work.
 
 

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern would work closely with the Statistics Function of the Development Research Team on:
  • reviewing and verification of statistical materials for the 2014 Report;
  • preparation of database entries for the Report and related tools;
  • support the team in data analysis and presentation of results related to the family of human development statistics;
  • participate in various brainstorming meetings and discussions; and
  • support other activities as requested by the head of the Statistics Function.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD Program in economics, social sciences, or statistics.
Experience:
  • Familiar with the Human Development Reports and measures
  • Excellent knowledge of and experience with Stata and Excel.
  • Good communication skills.
Language Requirements:
  • Speaking, writing and editing skills in English
Internship Summary
The objective of this internship is to provide participants with the opportunity to learn about Human Development Reports, their various themes and development issues; as well as  human development indices and efforts  to raise the quality of these reports; to be knowledgeable about current international development issues; to master skills in basic analysis, statistics and research work; to be exposed to a large database of human development relevant indicators and indices, and related information.
 
Interns’ Expenses:
Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. All costs connected with an intern's participation in the Programme must be borne by: the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, etc.
 
Subsequent Employment:
The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
