PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mercy Corps Indonesia works to address the root causes of poverty to improve the quality of life for disaster and conflict affected, urban, and coastal communities. Current programs promote sustainable economic development through integrated, entrepreneurial self-help programs and skills training, with a particular focus on health, nutrition, and environmental development for underprivileged communities.
Mercy Corps is implementing a three-year program working with 3,000 coffee farming families in Aceh Tengah and Bener Meriah to improve healthy behavior and financial access funded by Green Mountain Coffee Roaster (GMCR). The Community Health and Investment for Livelihood Initiative (CHILI) program directly addresses GMCR’s core focus areas of hunger and poverty in the coffee value chain. The program combines strategies – tested and refined in other Mercy Corps Indonesia programs – in maternal and child health and nutrition with financial literacy, management and access to services. Through an integrated approach, coffee growing households will increase their savings and access to credit, learn to better manage household finances and ensure that mothers practice healthy behaviors. These efforts will lead to an increase in the practice of breastfeeding, reduced expenditures on baby formula, increased savings and improved credit access year round which is critical for the cyclical nature of coffee cultivation.
After 2 years of implementing the CHILI program in Bener Meriah and Takengon, Mercy Corps is interested in bringing on an intern to monitor the impact of the key components of the program on the community and the government. The impact monitoring result will be the recommendation for future program proposal development.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
It is expected that the intern will
- gain extensive learning in international development programming and implementation results through examining multiple and varied types of approaches to supporting and tracking field-level monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
- The intern will learn about the challenges of conducting M&E in developing countries and get an in-depth grounding in indicators and data use in the field.

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong analytical skill
- Knowledge and experience on Design Monitoring & Evaluation for programs and/or projects
- Strong in data analysis
- Strong research and writing skills
- Experience working in remote areas
LIVING CONDITIONS:
Theintern will be stationed in Takengon city. Takengon is small city in the highlands of Aceh and has limited public services. Access to Takengon only by bus from Medan or Banda Aceh and often hampered due the landslide. Mercy Corps will help the intern find local housing in Takengon. Most of people in Takengon and Bener Meriah are coffee farmers. Mercy Corps will provide office space with internet connection and the facilities needed to complete the SOW. Having bhasa Indonesia language skills is a plus.
