PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Background
Early initiation of breastfeeding has benefits for newborn survival and beyond. Breastfeeding promotes child survival, health, brain and motor development. While breastfeeding has lifelong benefits for both the mother and child, the risks of not breastfeeding are particularly pronounced early in life. Early initiation of breastfeeding, and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, prevents neonatal and infant deaths largely by reducing the risk of infectious diseases. Lessons learned from the Aceh Tsunami and Jogjakarta earthquake in 2006 brought to light the need for awareness campaigns supporting 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia. Those lessons shape many breastfeeding programs in the country today.

Significance
Mercy Corps in Indonesia has been implementing programs to promote and support newborn survival through breastfeeding since 2007. One of several key healthy behavior change messages, breastfeeding has been integrated as a foundation and one of the lifesaving interventions in community-based integrated management of childhood illnesses (C-IMCI) model in at least two Mercy Corps program sites in Java and Maluku. Mercy Corps Indonesia, with two consecutive support grants from USAID Child Survival and Health Grants Program and UNICEF have further expand community-based breastfeeding promotion to cover maternal nutrition, pneumonia, diarrhea and low birth weight. Recent reports from a Mercy Corps survey and secondary surveillance from partner districts have suggested that more women have yet to be covered with systematic support and protection to exclusive breastfeeding.

Objective
To assess and describe the bottlenecks to systematic coverage for breastfeeding support, promotion and protection as part of Mercy Corps ongoing Health & Nutrition Program in Indonesia.

3.  Document unforeseen potential benefits that can be capitalized to improve newborn survival equity intervention from multiple context of Mercy Corps working area.
