PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  Mercy Corps is seeking a Corporate and Foundation Partnerships Research Intern to work in its Resource Development department on projects related to identifying and engaging businesses, organizations and foundations through cause marketing promotions, employee engagement, and direct contributions. The intern would round out his/her experience on the Resource Development team by assisting with projects related to other aspects of fundraising and marketing at Mercy Corps.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  The intern will have the opportunity to research and learn about best practices among nonprofit organizations and businesses in developing marketing and employee engagement/giving partnerships, from in store campaigns to the latest social media tactics and engagement tools. The intern will also have the opportunity to learn about creating communication and donor stewardship pieces – including letters, emails, briefing papers, web pages, and powerpoint presentations – for use in engaging businesses and their employees, as well as foundations.

The intern will further broaden his/her experience by assisting with a handful of smaller projects and tasks related to other aspects of fundraising and marketing. These may include preparing fundraising mailings, inputting and analyzing data, and a limited amount of related administrative tasks.

DELIVERABLES:
  • Identify and research prospective corporate and foundation fundraising partners
  • Research best practices in corporate relations and fundraising, including cause marketing partnerships, employee engagement, and direct philanthropy and develop briefing documents on these topics for internal use
  • Develop outreach and stewardship materials for use in recruiting and engaging businesses and foundations
  • Other marketing and fundraising tasks to be determined based on intern’s interests and skill set
  • Some administrative tasks as assigned

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum completion of 2 years of college. Graduate students and recent college graduates are welcome to apply.
  • Related work experience or course of study – e.g. business, fundraising, marketing,  journalism, communications, PR, advocacy, international relations or development
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Passion for Mercy Corps’ mission and enthusiasm for collaboration among the private, public and nonprofit sectors in addressing global issues
  • Works well independently with minimal supervision; a self-starter
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, database software (e.g. Raiser’s Edge, Access, or Salesforce)
  • Preferred: Experience working with people by phone (e.g. sales, advocacy, fundraising)
  • Preferred: MS World mail merge, expertise in PowerPoint, Raiser’s Edge, video editing
