Global Internship:
Mercy Corps responsibilities
For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:
            ISOS emergency medical evacuation coverage
            Local transport and accommodations for work-related travel
            Office space and use of office equipment, such as printer, scanner etc.

Intern responsibilities
Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:
Visa fees
            Accommodation
            Living costs
            Flights and Transport
            Medical Insurance
            All other costs associated with this internship


PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mercy Corps Indonesia’s goal is to address the root causes of poverty, thereby improving the quality of life for disaster and conflict affected, urban, and coastal communities.

Following multiple years of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) interventions in Sumatra, Mercy Corps is now beginning an 18 months OFDA-funded project called “Resilient Environment through Active DRR Initiatives” (READI).  The overal objective is to assist the people of Sumatra in improving resilience and preparedness to cope with natural hazards affecting the area.  The READI program addresses the needs of the most populated coastal communities of Sumatra (Bengkulu, Padang, Meulaboh, Nias and Mentawai) and views resilience as the capacity of households, communities and institutions to reduce the likelihood and mitigate the impact of natural hazards; as well as their capacity to take swift action should a disaster occur.

The objective of this project is to implement interventions that contributes to saving lives, alleviating suffering, and reducing the economic impact of future disasters by building local capacity for disaster management, increasing risk and mitigation awareness, and improving warning systems.  Specifically, Mercy Corps will intervene in the following areas:

  1. Awareness Campaign & Pro-active Engagement,
  2. Evacuation Maps,
  3. Capacity Building,
  4. Tsunami Vertical Shelter,
  5. Enhanced Emergency Information System (Emergency Masts),
  6. AM/FM Emergency Radio Broadcasting,
  7. Partnership with private and public sector, and civil society.

In general, Geographic Information System (GIS) Intern is responsible developing a GIS for evacuation map. Intern will coordinate with team in READI Program to provide information and collecting data. Intern must ensure that GI systems and data are fully integrated in evacuation map in 5 areas (Padang, Bengkulu, Meulaboh, Nias, and Mentawai) that will produce.

The other essential responsibilities:
  1. Support on developing a GIS for READI Program, especially for evacuation map.
  2. Disseminating internally on result of analyzing through displaying information based on geographical references.
  3. Providing support for social media and communication tools. Collaborate with Social Media Officer in READI Program to develop newsletter, leaflet or brochure.
  4. Contributing to the design and development of evacuation map in collaboration with team in 5 areas READI Program.
  5. Representing Mercy Corps in a professional, respectful and technically sound way to donors, colleague agencies, government and the private sector at all times;
  6. Collaborating and coordinating with other aspects of READI program as well as other MC Indonesia programs;
  7. Establishing cordial, professional relations with MC staff, community leaders, government officials, local NGOs and beneficiaries, ensuring Mercy Corps’ ability to work with transparency, accountability and good will. 
  8. Conduct himself / herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and in no way jeopardize our humanitarian efforts.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of internship, GIS Intern can learn how to implementation geographic information system based at the community level. The maps will reflect the evacuation possibilities in the area and take into consideration the possibility of directing people toward vertical shelters, where these exist (or are under construction) and tsunami safe building.  Also this maps to ensure the inclusion of easily recognizable landmarks and other measures to allow all beneficiaries to comprehend the routes, and to be aware of community ahead of next disaster.

DELIVERABLES:
In this internship period, GIS Intern will focus on the creation of 5 community-specific evacuation maps and how involve or coach government officials on how to replicate the mapping in other areas.

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong technical background on geographic information system
  • Ability to develop systems for accurate and timely program for data collecting, displaying and sharing the information to understand urban and coastal condition and changes as a result after implementing program.
  • The candidate must have experience collecting, entering and analyzing data. 
  • The candidate must also be able to work effectively with and communicate well at both governmental and community levels.
  • He or she should be familiar with the concepts of using data for decision-making. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Arc View or kind of Mapping Software,
  • English language oral and writing skills capacity.  

LIVING CONDITIONS:
The intern will be based in Padang City, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia.  The population of Padang City is estimated at 847,567 (2011), with density 1220 people/km2. Padang City has various height range from 0-1853 m above sea level. The temperature is quite high between 22-32°C with the humidity between 77-94%. The volume average of rain fall is about 290 mm/month and the average number of rainy day is 15 days/month.
Main food is rice and most of local restaurants offer cuisine with spicy seasonings. But many food choices, both with national menus or fast food restaurants such as McDonald's, KFC, and Pizza Hut.        

Mercy Corps interns and volunteers represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
