Overview
EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute's Center for Sustainable Transport, is looking for a research intern for its Washington DC office.  The intern will support ongoing research and project work on a variety of topics ranging from street and urban design to traffic safety and traffic data collection and analysis. This is a great opportunity to gain exposure to a wide variety of topics and current issues in international transportation, as the position will interact with offices in six countries in Latin America and Asia, and with multiple departments at the global office. This is a three-month internship with potential for extension with a start date in May or June, depending on the selected candidate’s availability.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities/activities for this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Work on street design and urban design renderings for transit corridors and neighborhoods in different cities around the world, with a focus on pedestrian and traffic safety;
  • Carry out literature review and document best practices in neighborhood design, traffic calming, design of transit systems such bus rapid transit or light rail;
  • Conduct data collection and analysis on indicators related to urban transport and urban development projects
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Design, City Planning, or related field;
  • Basic knowledge of Sketchup, AutoCAD or similar design software;
  • Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel (or other spreadsheet programs) and capacity to learn other types of graphics and presentation programs;
  • Previous experience or coursework related to street design, urban design, transportation planning, or transportation engineering
  • Competence to undertake high-profile research assignments with minimal supervision
  • Fluency in English
Preferred
  • Student working towards Master’s degree in Architecture, Urban Design, Civil Engineering, City and Regional Planning, or other related field.
  • Knowledge of traffic and crash data collection and analysis techniques is a plus

Time: EMBARQ offers a 3-month internship, with possibility of extension.
