Overview
The World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks an intern to support transport greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) inventories and travel demand management research.  The internship will be unpaid but will offer valuable experience in working for a D.C. non-profit in the growing fields of sustainable transportation and GHG accounting. This is a joint position between WRI’s Sustainability Initiative and sustainable transport program, EMBARQ. The intern will support a GHG emissions inventory of EMBARQ’s international offices in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Turkey, India and China, including staff commuting and transport emissions. Furthermore, the intern will research global best practices in employer-based travel demand management policies and develop specific recommendations for how WRI can minimize transport-related emissions in new office locations and reduce emissions in its existing offices.

EMBARQ is the World Resources Institute’s Center for Sustainable Transport. The EMBARQ global network catalyzes environmentally and financially sustainable transport solutions to improve quality of life in cities. Since 2002, the network has grown to include five Centers for Sustainable Transport based in Mexico, Brazil, India, Turkey and the Andean Region, which are focused on implementing concrete changes to improve mobility in many of the world’s most important cities, in coordination with a Washington, D.C.-based team of distinguishedexperts. By focusing on transport, which affects everything from prosperity to pollution, EMBARQ seeks to generate significant social, environmental and economic benefits in the cities and communities where it works.

The objective of WRI’s Sustainability Initiative is to “learn by doing” and to apply research from across the Institute to reduce our own environmental footprint. More information on the Initiative can be found here: http://www.wri.org/project/wri-sustainability-initiative.

This is a three-month unpaid internship with a possible extension of up to six months, ideally starting by June 2013. The position offers the opportunity to engage with sustainable transportation and greenhouse gas inventory experts and key stakeholders around the world. The preferred location is WRI’s Washington, D.C. office, though a remote internship from WRI’s Beijing or Mumbai office will be considered for the right candidate.
