Job Description
INTERN WORKSITE LOCATION:   MC Kenya is looking for 2 interns to be based in Thika and Eldoret, Kenya

DATES OF INTERNSHIP:   Starting between May 15 – June 15

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP:   3-5 months (as available)

Mercy Corps responsibilities
For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:
  • Working  Station/desk
  • All required office supplies
  • Access to DL, Clearspace, etc.
  • Ground transport to field locations from the Thika & Eldoret offices

Intern responsibilities
Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:
  • Housing in Thika/Eldoret
  • Bring along a computer
  • International Travel to/from Thika or Eldoret
  • Living Expenses
  • Medical Insurance
  • All other costs associated with this internship

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Yes Youth Can! Program in Central and Rift Valley targets 1.500,000 at-risk youth in Seven Counties of Rift valley and four counties of Central Province. The program supports the Kenya Post Election recovery with an overall goal of supporting youth and youth structures to be agents of positive change in their communities, Mercy Corps and our partners have developed a series of integrated activities that work towards four objectives:

  • Mobilization of youth and formation of youth representation structures at the village and county levels; with over 7,000 village bunges and 9 county boards across the two regions.
  • Support youth to exercise a greater voice in local and national affairs with youth involved in advocacy campaigns, community service and stakeholders forums.
  • Increase youth productivity, employment opportunities, and income; with over 15,000 youth trained in life skills and entrepreneurship, 2,000 village bunges developing business proposals and 100 enterprise grants given to the bunges for small income generating activities.
  • Increase young women’s access to social, political, and economic opportunities with over 5,000 young women involved in mentorship forums and conducted outreach campaigns. Over 100 stories have been collected from the women.

The intern will work with the County Boards in setting up secretariats and training of the secretariats in basic management skills. It will also support the documentation, publicity and fundraising strategies for the boards.   He/she will work with the YYC Team in both Regions and the Boards executives in each county team on revising or developing new resource materials for County Boards, on such topics as financial management, book keeping and basic accounting, public speaking, documentation, fundraising and resource mobilization, or others as suggested by the program needs and intern’s skills or interests.   Specifically, the tasks may include:

  • County Secretariat Office in a Box Resource Development.  Help to coordinate and implement a strategy to develop resource materials as above, and develop new ‘tip sheets‘(possible topics, finance management, resource mobilization & fundraising, book keeping, monitoring & evaluation, public speaking and leadership etc.).
  • Training & capacity Building.   As needed, the intern may support the program manager and training specialist in conducting trainings on the materials developed above to the board executive and the secretariat.
  • Knowledge Management.   The intern may help the M&E officers and team in initiatives related to knowledge management – the effective use of results and evaluations for improving Board activities program documentation, design and implementation.


DELIVERABLES:
  • Development of select training modules for County Secretariats as above.
  • Tip Sheets for the program modules above.
  •     Training and capacity building sessions for the secretariats and the Board Executives

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The intern will learn:
  • Internalize youth structure formation and set up of youth nascent secretariats.
  • The challenges facing youth in transition areas (kenya) and how they are finding solutions through organizational capacity building and voice.
  • Learn  from new and existing resources in MC for civil Society capacity building and explore their use with the county secretariats 
  • Acquire other skills in program management by working alongside a dynamic experienced team.


IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:   
  • Undergraduate or graduate student in social sciences with interest in organizational development, capacity building and  training

  • Detail-oriented and able to work with youth with low capacities
  • Highly adept with various software, including spreadsheet, database, presentation and publisher.
  • Good interpersonal/communication skills


LIVING CONDITIONS:
This position is Eldoret and Thika.   Housing is not provided, but assistance in obtaining housing can be provided.   The Mercy Corps office in Eldoret is located in a safe place near the town with supermarkets, hotels and restaurants and all weather roads. The Thika Office is located 1.5 KM from Thika town where all basic services are located with good road connection.

Mercy Corps Team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting. Staff are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
