Teacher Exchange Program, Uganda (Summer 2014)

Are you a secondary-level educator passionate about experiencing new cultures, facilitating cross-cultural educational dialogue, and investing in teacher capacity worldwide?  At Invisible Children, we are looking for motivated, globally-minded secondary educators to join our
Summer 2014 Teacher Exchange (TEX) program in Gulu, Uganda.

Our TEX program allows progressive educators from around the world to spend six weeks as collaborative team-teachers at one of our twenty partner schools in northern Uganda. Invisible Children’s TEX partnership was developed in 2007 under the Schools for Schools (S4S) program, in an effort to contribute to the holistic rebuilding of secondary schools in northern Uganda and educator advancement around the world.
This 6-week experience will allow you to dip your toes in a new culture, engage Ugandan teachers in collaborative classroom explorations, facilitate cross-cultural relationships, and develop strategies to engage a variety of learners, all through the lens of team teaching.


Job Summary:
  • - Participate in orientation trainings and workshops led by Invisible Children Uganda (ICU) staff
  • - Team-teach alongside a Ugandan partner educator in one of ICU’s 20 partner schools
  • - Collaborate in the planning and development of lesson plans
  • - Participate in and lead classroom lectures
  • - Invest in students and participate in social and cultural activities such as sports competitions, school festivities, etc.
  • - Contribute to round-table discussions at the end of each week with fellow educators to maximize learning and shared knowledge
  • - Represent ICU both in and out of the classroom
  • - Attend ICU’s International Teaching and Learning Conference in Gulu  


Position Details:
This is a volunteer 6-week position, based in northern Uganda.


Minimum Requirements:
  • - 2+ years of experience as a secondary-level educator
  • - Graduate level education or state certification preferred

Qualifications:
  • - Graduate level education and/or state certification
  • - Strong belief in the mission and core values of Invisible Children
  • - Passion for teaching and the ability to collaborate with other educators
  • - Respect for other cultures and strong cross cultural communication skills
  • - Strong public speaking skills
  • - Comfortable traveling by motorcycle taxi daily to/from work
  • - Proven flexibility and adaptability in new environments
