Oxfam is an international confederation of 17 organizations networked together in 92 countries, as part of a global movement for change, to build a future free from the injustice of poverty. Our Secretariat is based in Oxford, with advocacy and campaigns offices in Washington DC, New York, Brussels, Geneva, Brasilia and a liaison office with the Africa Union in Addis Ababa.

This post will be part of the OI Secretariat Humanitarian Department and based in the OI Secretariat Office in Summertown, Oxford.

The Humanitarian Department within Oxfam International Secretariat, has a leading role in emergency responses for promoting accountability, learning, quality and innovation across the confederation.  We are looking for two enthusiastic interns: one to work on supporting internal Oxfam communications and newsletters linking with the Rights in Crisis Campaign, and the second to support our humanitarian coordination work by being involved in specific projects or research linked to the crisis we are supporting at the time.

The internship will be based within the Oxfam International Secretariat office in Summertown, Oxford. The interns will work with the Humanitarian Team and the projects will bring the intern into contact with the 17 national Oxfam affiliate organizations, and a wide range of Oxfam staff.

We are looking for candidates with excellent coordination skills, computer literate in MS word, excel, and email, proven organizational and time management skills and a ‘can-do’ attitude. An affinity with the aims and purposes of Oxfam International is important.  A good understanding and interest in the Humanitarian Sector is desirable. 
The post-holder must be eligible to do unpaid work in the UK.


Internship Purpose

To ensure regular and quality internal communication of Humanitarian department and Rights in Crisis department. To provide general support to the Humanitarian department


Key Intern Responsibilities

Communications
  • Support in producing bimonthly internal newsletter covering humanitarian and RIC Campaign prioritized activities.
  • Support in compiling Oxfam emergencies updates from the lead affiliates
  • Support communication prioritised new disaster and crisis responses

Intranet
  • Maintain the Humanitarian and RIC Campaign sections of Oxfam’s intranet, including posting content, creating news items, and updating calendars
  • Ensure quality and consistency in new RIC intranet (Sumus) content/groups and Humanitarian
  • Offer Sumus training to RIC Campaign and Humanitarian staff, as needed
  • Organizing Humanitarian responses archives after intranet migration

Support to the Rights in Crisis Campaign team
  • Support the Coordinator in implementing our weekly communications framework across the  campaign, including collating content and drafting updates
  • Provide general administrative support to the campaign, Head of the Campaign and Coordinator as required (no more than 5% in total).

Support to Humanitarian department
  • Possible research tasks to support work for humanitarian strategy development and strategic plan review
  • Taking minutes some of the Emergency Managers Network and other teleconferences
  • Support the Humanitarian Information Administrator logisitics in preparation of meetings.
  • Support the Information Administrator in general administrative tasks and arranging travels for the Humanitarian Director and organising/preparing meetings

Key Intern Competencies
  • Studies in communications/related field or previous sufficient experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written command of English.
  • Multimedia and website management skills are highly desirable and strong command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher) is a must.
  • Experience engaging with social media.
  • Strong understanding of and interest in humanitarian work.
  • Organizational and administrative skills.
  • Effective team player with the ability to work and think independently, and to be resourceful and proactive.
