Department
Description
The Nanoscale Sciences Department (within the
Physical, Chemical, & Nanosciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories)
conducts leading edge research that advances the understanding of materials at
the nanoscale. Our research focuses on
investigations relevant for the collaborative development of innovative
solutions for challenging problems that support Sandia?s broad and evolving
National Security and Energy Missions.
Our main research focus is directed along four thrusts: (1) advancing
materials & device understanding enabled by innovative surface and
interface characterization (i.e., for photovoltaics, electronic devices,
battery materials); (2) the development of nanoporous and nanostructured
materials that enable next generation device needs (i.e., for hazardous
materials capture, water treatment, catalysis); (3) advancing our understanding
and application of low dimensional materials (i.e., graphene, nanofibers,
quantum dots); and (4) advancing the understanding of the thermal science of
materials at the nanoscale for potential applications (i.e., for device thermal
management, thermoelectrics). We target
high impact materials research activities (evidenced by pioneering journal
publications and high profile presentations) that can also potentially impact
relevant applications.
