INTERN WORKSITE LOCATION:  Portland, OR Headquarters

DATES OF INTERNSHIP:  July – December, 15 – 20 hrs

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mercy Corps works amid disasters, conflicts, chronic poverty and instability to unleash the potential of people who can win against nearly impossible odds. Since 1979, Mercy Corps has provided $1.5 billion in assistance to people in 106 nations.  Supported by headquarters in North America and Europe, the agency's global programs employ 3,500 staff worldwide and reach 16.4 million people in more than 35 countries. Over the past five years, more than 89 percent of the agency's resources have been allocated directly to programs that help people in need. 
           
Mercy Corps’ program department is responsible for supporting field led programming that delivers measurable impact.  The program department provides support in the design, monitoring, implementation and evaluation of field-led programs and operations, ensures qualitative and timely donor reports, maintains program data integrity and knowledge management throughout the agency, and seeks to enliven our innovative approach, which delivers the highest quality service. 

The Program Operations Intern will work with all of the regional teams to provide support where most needed. The intern will support the growth, development and administration of Mercy Corps’ programs around the world.  S/he will provide surge support to the existing team including supporting improved knowledge management of existing and completed grants, review and editing of donor reporting, and proposal development.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES AND DELIVERABLES:
  1. Work with the Middle East Program Operations team to improve the institutional knowledge and data retention of Mercy Corps' country programs, agency wide.
  2. Serve as point of contact for updating program information within Mercy Corps' grant tracking system (GAIT) and ensuring processes for grant compliance are implemented.
  3. Work closely with the Assistant Program Officer and Senior Program Officer, Middle East to review country program data and check for consistency and accuracy.
  4. Attend Program Operations meetings and stay current on key Program initiatives. Review the Round-the-World Update.
  5. Provide surge capacity for donor reporting and proposal development as needed.
  6. Other duties as requested


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Gain knowledge and experience with an international non-governmental organization and the development industry
  • Learn about MC programs with specific focus on the Middle East
  • Understand the function of HQ office in supporting relief and development activities.

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BA/S or MA/S or equivalent in related field complete or in progress.
  • Strong computer skills and high level of experience with Office 2003/2007 applications, in particular: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required and ability to handle confidential matters appropriately.
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple competing requests, tasks, deadlines, needs.
  • International, non-profit, and government experience and/or interest preferred.
  • Experience with research project is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative to achieve tasks.

Mercy Corps Team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting. Staff are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
