The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) seeks an undergraduate or graduate student with a strong interest in monitoring and evaluating democracy and governance programming. This is a full-time (40 hours), paid internship beginning in the end of May of 2013.  The intern will be a member of the small but busy Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning Team. The intern’s work will contribute to a larger initiative to enhance monitoring, evaluation and learning at NDI, a nonprofit organization working to strengthen and expand democracy worldwide. The intern will support the following team activities:  the implementation of programmatic assessments and evaluations; the piloting of M&E systems in the field; and the global delivery of M&E training and capacity-building.  This is a unique opportunity for the right person to gain practical experience in the use of applied research for strengthening programming in democracy and governance.   
Duties/Responsibilities:
Supporting evaluations
  • Support the management of social network analysis survey data.
  • support the management of qualitative data from current NDI evaluations.
  • Support the visualization and presentation of qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Provide literature reviews of innovative evaluation methodologies.
  • Support the development of data collection and analysis protocols.
  • Support the finalization of evaluation reports.
Supporting the piloting of Monitoring & Reporting Systems in the field
  • Support staff in developing M&E tools and resources for NDI staff and partners.
Supporting M&E learning and capacity building
  • Support in-person NDI staff training and orientation on monitoring and evaluation.
  • Maintain and support the refinement of an online M&E portal, M&E toolbox, and interactive learning materials (e.g., blog, wiki, e-learning Elluminate presentations, and interactive tools).
  • Track the use of online tools and resources.
Administration and Logistics
  • Manage and support requests for technical assistance from staff in the field
  • Assist in coordinating M&E working groups, virtual groups and committees as needed
  • Complete travel and logistics arrangements
  • Organize team meeting, maintain team case management records and meeting  minutes.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Pursuing a graduate degree in development studies, public policy, international affairs, non-profit management, organizational learning, educational media, social science or a related field, at the time of participation in the internship
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative data management and analysis.
  • Experience in creating charts and graphs in excel and google platform applications.
  • Interest and ease in learning and applying new technology and software
  • Demonstrated interest in international issues related to democratic development
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, work independently as well as part of a fast-paced team
  • Organized and efficient
  • Varied computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Google Analytics and Google Applications)
  • Proficiency in STATA, Nvivo or other data software a plus.
  • Previous interest and experience in applied research methodologies,
  • Foreign languages a plus.  French a pluss
  • Ability to make a 9-12 month commitment strongly preferred.
Comments
This is a paid internship. The intern will gain an enhanced understanding of applied research and organizational learning in democratic development programs and non-profit organizations.   The intern will have the opportunity to focus on democracy programs and methods for evaluating them. In addition, the team will work with the intern to establish learning objectives, encouraging the intern to attend lectures, discussion sessions and other events at NDI. The internship is also an opportunity to meet NDI staff working on areas that may be of particular interest. Only those applicants under consideration will be contacted.
