Oxfam is an international confederation of 17 organizations networked together in 92 countries, as part of a global movement for change, to build a future free from the injustice of poverty. Our Secretariat is based in Oxford, with advocacy and campaigns offices in Washington DC, New York, Brussels, Geneva, Brasilia and a liaison office with the Africa Union in Addis Ababa.

The Humanitarian Department within Oxfam International Secretariat, has a leading role in emergency responses for promoting accountability, learning, quality and innovation across the confederation, is looking for two enthusiastic interns: one to work on supporting internal Oxfam communications and newsletters linking with the Rights in Crisis Campaign, and the second to support our humanitarian coordination work by being involved in specific projects or research linked to the crisis we are supporting at the time.

The internship will be based within the Oxfam International Secretariat office in Summertown, Oxford. The interns will work with the Humanitarian Team and the projects will bring the intern into contact with the 17 national Oxfam affiliate organizations, and a wide range of Oxfam staff.

We are looking for candidates with excellent coordination skills, computer literate in MS word, excel, and email, proven organizational and time management skills and a ‘can-do’ attitude. An affinity with the aims and purposes of Oxfam International is important.  A good understanding and interest in the Humanitarian Sector is desirable. 


Internship Purpose

The Humanitarian intern has a key role in providing analysis on Oxfam’s response, country preparedness and supporting longer term development work.


Key Intern Responsibilities
  • Support the Humanitarian Officers in compiling a comprehensive update on all Oxfam’s responses globally and assist in following key emergencies
  • Work on ad-hock research projects to support the humanitarian team depending on the interests and background of the candidate, e.g. meta analysis of real time evaluation or similar projects.
  • Provide support the organisation of Emergency Mangers Network, assist in taking minutes and tasks coming out of the groups.
  • Provide support in organising of meetings, telephone conferences, taking of minutes and related activities.
  • Provide additional support to the humanitarian department as requested (time permitting).

Key Intern Competencies
  • Degree in Development Studies, Disaster Management, Humanitarian Studies, Economics or related fields, a Master would be desirable
  • Excellent verbal and written command of English, knowledge of a second language would be an asset
  • Strong understanding of and interest in humanitarian work e.g have had previous experience in volunteering.
  • Organizational and administrative skills.
  • Computer literate and with good knowledge of Microsoft Office packages including Word and Excel
  • Good communication skills, and ability to communicate at a distance with colleagues in other Oxfam offices
  • Experience in project management or have proven skills would be desirable
  • Effective team player with the ability to work and think independently, and to be resourceful and proactive.
