Overview
The Health and Road Safety program of EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute's Center for Sustainable Transport, is looking for a research and program intern.  The intern will support ongoing research about public health and sustainable transportation, in particular, focusing on traffic safety, physical activity, and air quality, as well as support the development of a public health strategy for the organization.  This public health Intern will work closely with EMBARQ’s Health and Road Safety team and EMBARQ researchers on a variety of research, data analysis, and writing assignments.  The intern will also play a key role in the development of a general public health strategy that will be used across EMBARQ.  The position reports to EMBARQ’s Health and Road Safety Director and is located at WRI’s headquarters in Washington, DC. The position is 40 hours per week, for up to six months.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities/activities for this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Literature review on policies regarding non-communicable diseases related to physical activity, air quality, traffic safety, and noise/stress in developed and developing countries.
  • Support on researching and refining methodologies on measuring the impact of sustainable urban transport and development on health, specifically traffic safety, physical activity and air quality.
  • Contribution on data collection and analysis on health indicators regarding urban transport and urban development projects.
  • Support on research in areas of physical activity, air quality, traffic safety, and noise/stress in developed and developing countries.
  • Support in the preparation of a general public health strategy that will help implement demonstration case studies and policies related to sustainable urban transport and sustainable urban development.
  • Conduct research for reports regarding air quality and its connection to sustainable transport, a report on safety on bus rapid transit corridors, and a report on traffic safety within urban development projects.
  • Provide support in the preparation of workshops where the issue of non-communicable diseases related to physical activity, air quality, traffic safety, and noise/stress will be discussed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, working towards Master’s degree in public health, economics, urban planning, transportation, public policy, or other related field.
  • Fluency in English
  • Demonstrated interest in public health, urban transportation, urban development, and urban issues on a global scale
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel (or other spreadsheet programs) and capacity to learn other types of graphics and presentation programs required;
  • Strong organization, high initiative, clear interpersonal skills, eye for detail, creativity and design, mature judgment, team player, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment required
  • Competence to undertake high-profile research assignments with minimal supervision
  • Preferred: knowledge of at least one other language spoken within the EMBARQ Network.

Time: EMBARQ offers a position of 40 hours per week and 6 months, starting by June 1st.
