INTERN WORKSITE LOCATION: Portland, Oregon, USA

DATES OF INTERNSHIP:  August 1- December 1, 2013

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP:  5 months, 20-30 hours per week (flexible)

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:
  • Workspace with Mercy Corps HQ;
  • Computer station

  • All other costs associated with internship


PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  
The Corporate Finance Department performs a vital function for Mercy Corps globally, interacting with all other departmental functions of the Agency in order to provide:
1.         Meaningful financial information to employees, management, donors, and regulators.
2.         Effective cash management
3.         Oversight and guidance of global travel management

Corporate Finance includes accounting, external financial reporting, global treasury management, and oversight of travel management functions.  The Corporate Finance Department works closely with the International Finance Department in consolidating field information to provide monthly consolidation of over 40 countries’ and over one dozen separate legal entities financial information.  It generates Mercy Corps’ and selected entities audited financial statements,  tax filings, debt compliance reports and other miscellaneous external financial and tax reports.  Corporate Finance also reviews and reports on over 40 separate legal entities that are either consolidated or included in MC financials as program related investments.  Under global treasury management, Corporate Finance provides management of cash and banking relationships, cash forecasting, foreign exchange transactions, debt and tax credit compliance. Corporate Finance also provides oversight of global travel management policies and process.


This internship position will assist Corporate Finance with the annual external audit and IRS Form 990.



LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  
Intern will be better positioned to job search for accounting/finance positions in both for profit and not-for-profit environments; will have a better understanding of finance dept. organization, audit process, and tax form preparation.

DELIVERABLES: workpapers adequately prepared to support audit and tax requirements

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Degree in accounting or current enrollment in an accounting program or relevant alternative program
  • At least 24 hours of accounting credits,
  • Advanced knowledge of excel,
  • Ability to work in a collaborative work environment
  • Flexibility
