AmeriCorps Position: Change Lives Through Literacy at Sound Learning

ABOUT AMERICORPS: AmeriCorps members work to strengthen communities through service projects in areas such as the environment, homelessness, education & literacy. This is a 10 ½ month, full-time position, sponsored by the Washington Service Corps. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-25 years old. Benefits include excellent training, a monthly stipend of $1,155 per month, health coverage, and a post-service education award of $5,550. This position begins on October 1st, 2013 and continues through Aug. 15th, 2014.

ABOUT SOUND LEARNING: Founded in 1991, Sound Learning is a non-profit organization promoting community-based education through small group tutoring and classes in Mason and Thurston Counties. Our programs include Basic Skills, GED Prep, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and civics studies. Sound Learning serves about 300 adults and youth every year, using the efforts of over 100 trained community volunteers & interns.
Sound Learning staff and volunteers are committed to learner-centered education that addresses the realities of participants' lives and is based on a collaborative model. All programs are founded on the belief that active participation in the family, workplace, and community depends on being fully literate, and that increased basic skills lead to personal empowerment and community development.
ABOUT THE POSITION: The AmeriCorps member will assist in implementing high quality, learner-centered educational programs serving adults in the areas of reading, writing, math, basic computers, and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Primary responsibilities include teaching, curriculum development, recruitment of volunteers & students, volunteer coordination, and required record keeping. The AmeriCorps member will also develop opportunities for students to connect with the larger community through informational workshops and community projects; help improve systems for collecting and utilizing data to demonstrate community impact; and assist in organizing special events and celebrations.
The AmeriCorps member will work with Mason County residents who are native English speakers and immigrants from other, mainly Spanish-speaking, countries. There will be opportunities to explore learner-centered teaching approaches, volunteer recruitment techniques, and community-building strategies. The AmeriCorps member will work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences, and in collaboration with a team of enthusiastic volunteers and staff. WHO SHOULD APPLYWe are looking for applicants between the ages of 18 and 25 who have at least a GED or High School diploma and are committed to community service and improving lives through education. Other traits include: an interest/experience in literacy and education, a commitment to social change, solid communication and computer skills, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and strong organizational skills. Applicants must be able to thrive in a diverse setting and demonstrate respect for people of varied cultural, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. Applicants should also exhibit patience, enthusiasm, and dedication to the mission of the organization. Finally, applicants must be available a minimum of three evenings a week and have reliable transportation. *Spanish language skills are desirable but not required.
