Research Intern

The Center for International Study and Development (CISD) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization based in Washington, DC. Our mission is to raise awareness of the social and economic struggles faced by tribal, nomadic, and indigenous peoples around the world. We seek to empower these populations through a comprehensive approach that addresses all of the structural disadvantages they face. Our pilot project, the Black Tents Project, has been operating since 2009; we have established 3 secular primary schools in Balochistan, Pakistan, an area where the population otherwise have no access to formal education. We are also constructing a women's center in Balochistan in the near future, which will provide services like microloans and job training to local women.

We are in the process of developing a new project targeting the indigenous populations of North America and the Kachi tribes in Southwest Asia. We are looking for a well-qualified graduate student to identify populations which suffer from structural disadvantages, and to explore different possibilities of how to best address these issues. The intern will be involved in every aspect of the creation of the project, from baseline research to drafting proposals, time permitting.
An ideal candidate would have some previous research experience and background in social development and/or anthropology. Background in indigenous rights issues is necessary. They must have a strong background in social study and anthropology. They must be flexible and disciplined, and be ready to work without close supervision. Finally, innovativeness and creativity in forming new approaches to structural issues would be a plus.
