Communications Intern

This unpaid internship will report to the VP for Communications and Marketing, supporting the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) Communications Team throughout the Fall of 2013, with a start date of October 1st. This position is ideally suited for Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Graduate students who would like to pursue a career in communications and marketing, and gain exposure to the life sciences industry. This position is located in Waltham, Massachusetts. The intern will be required to provide his or her own transportation to and from the MLSC.

Based on performance, the Communications Intern may be offered the opportunity to remain with the MLSC through the Spring 2014 semester.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work closely with the Vice President for Communications and Marketing and the Senior Communications Coordinator on projects involving initiatives to further the MLSC's mission.
  • Write press releases, media advisories and congratulatory/thank-you letters
  • Monitor industry and MLSC news in the media.
  • Maintain and expand the organization's social media content.
  • Coordinate the MLSC's participation in trade shows and other business development activities.
  • Attend departmental and business development meetings.
  • Assist with event logistics for ribbon-cuttings, press announcements, trade shows and industry conferences.
  • Perform market research projects/outreach -- requires ability to call companies, request information, etc.
  • Provide general support to the Communications Team.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Graduate student in college, pursuing a Journalism, Communications, or English Degree.
  • Must have academic coursework or relevant work experience in PR, Communications, Journalism, Business Administration and/or Business Development.
  • Must have high level of interpersonal skills, be able to maintain confidentiality and possess good judgment.
  • Must be proactive, eager to learn, detail-oriented, comfortable with a dynamic environment, able to prioritize, comfortable working with colleagues from different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must have basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
EXTENT OF PUBLIC CONTACT
May have contact with outside companies, government officials and media outlets.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed primarily in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
  • Must be able to work at least two days a week, eight hours per day.
  • Occasional adjustments to schedule may be requested.
  • Some travel required (no more than five percent) possible.
