Community Technology Intern

The Women's Building (TWB) is a multi-cultural, multi-service center in the Mission District of San Francisco. TWB provides services and programs to empower women and girls, a home to a variety of non-profit organizations, and a community center with meeting spaces. Our mission is to provide women and girls with the tools and resources they need to achieve full and equal participation in society.
Our Community Resource Room (CRR) provides free, bilingual (English/Spanish) services, access to technology and resources for employment, housing, health care, legal services, and more. We are looking for an intern to provide support to our Community Technology Program. This includes one-on-one technology assistance in English and Spanish to visitors who come to The Women's Building's Community Technology Lab, as well as assisting with computer classes and supporting the Community Technology Facilitator.

Hours: 4-12 hours per week, consisting of (depending on your interest and availability):
- Monday's, Tuesday's/Friday's 1-5pm one-on-one tech assistance
- Assisting or teaching community technology classes, weekday mornings (possible topics: How to use Skype, How to set up a Facebook profile, Basic Internet Search, How to take photos and share on your cell phone, etc.)
- Flexible office hours working with the Community Technology Facilitator
Supervisor: Community Technology Facilitator
Responsibilities include:
  • Provide culturally sensitive, one-on-one computer and technology assistance to visitors who drop in and/or make appointments.
  • Assist computer lab users with procedures such as using e-mail, researching on the Internet, typing a resume, transferring and saving files, etc.
  • Assist with administrative duties and data collection.
  • Support the development of the Community Technology Program through:
- Creating lab and outreach materials such as informational fliers, posters and pamphlets
- Distributing outreach materials into the community at other Community Based Organizations, events, etc.
- Assisting the Community Technology Facilitator in curriculum development for computer and technology classes
- And more!
Qualifications:
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Technologically proficient and knowledgeable of various computer applications – you do not need to have any special computer skills– just basic MS Office and feel comfortable navigating the internet. Most CRR users are at the basic computer level.
  • Conversational Spanish language abilities.
  • Cultural competence in working with diverse populations, including communities of color, immigrants, LGBT communities, and persons of various ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, health status, and abilities.
Training / Leadership Development Goals:
  • Gain experience serving a diverse community and meeting real needs of women and their families.
  • Become familiar with the exciting social justice movements of Digital Literacy and Community Technology.
  • Develop knowledge of and experience with community services and program operation.
  • Practice your Spanish in a practical real-world environment
