Fall 2013 - Medical Volunteers for Chisang Clinic in Rural Eastern Nepal

Chisang Clinic in rural eastern Nepal is seeking volunteers to assist in the day-to-day operations at its two clinics, birthing center and community outreach clinic.

Chisang Clinic now has two clinics in two very different locations and altitudes. Chisang Clinic Bhaunne, our first clinic, is located at 200 feet above sea level in Nepal's far eastern Plains where the climate is tropical. Also, at this clinic, we are working on the Birthing Center Extension. Our Birthing Center Extension Project consists of two stages –
  • Completion of the Feasibility Study for the Chisang Clinic Birthing Center, and
  • Construction of the Chisang Clinic Birthing Center Extension to the present clinic
We have completed the first stage and are currently working hard to complete the construction work in time for the Chisang Clinic Birthing Center to be operational by early summer.
Our second clinic, Chisang Clinic Dhankuta, the recently inaugurated clinic, is located at an altitude of 8200 feet in Jorpati village in Nepal's eastern Hill district of Dhankuta.
Chisang Clinic Bhaunne, Chisang Clinic Dhankuta and Chisang Clinic Birthing Center present many unique medical challenges that are harder to come by in urban settings.
As a volunteer you might find yourself hiking for two hours to provide wound care, shadowing a doctor on rounds, or check on a recently delivered baby. Or you could be traveling to the mountainous villages on the High Hills of eastern Nepal on our Community Outreach Program and weighing babies and completing Growth Charts.
No prior experience in medicine is needed, and volunteers of all background will be trained to take blood pressure, temperature, weight measurements etc. so that they can assist nurses and doctors in their daily activities. While we welcome volunteers with little to no medical experience, this opportunity is also ideal for nurses, midwives, CNAs, physician's assistants and medical students. All volunteers will be able to participate in hospital and clinic operations according to their skills and experience.
During their stay volunteers will also have the opportunity to participate in select camps and trainings offered at Chisang Clinic surgical camps, ANC and community-based primary health care trainings, and review of patient cases.
At both our clinics, volunteers will have their own bed with desk/table and closet space. Nepali dal bhat and tarkarki (rice, lentils and curry) will be served at noon and the evening. Breakfast will be served at around 7:30 AM and afternoon snack at 4:00 PM. Nepali Milk Tea or chiya will be served throughout the day at volunteer's request for a fee of $20-$25/day depending on the length of stay and clinic you volunteer at. All volunteers are requested to stay for a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of five months.
