Development and Events Intern

Crisis Group is seeking a full-time intern to assist with its Development Department, starting 2 September 2013. The intern will work with the Director of Private Sector Initiatives and the Development Officer in all fundraising activities related to Individuals, Corporations and Family Foundations. S/he will also have the opportunity to work closely with the Special Events team. Potential main tasks will include:

  • Helping to establish and sustain close relationships with current and prospective funders.
  • Assisting with the preparation of funding proposals and correspondence.
  • Coordinating fundraising events.  
  • Processing gifts and working with the Development Officer to personalize timely renewals and acknowledgements. 
  • Researching and compiling accurate profiles of prospective funders.
  • Maintaining the donor database and records and keeping them up-to-date. 
  • Researching potential guest speakers, honorees and performers; drafting save the dates and invitations; keeping track of guest lists; working with vendors; and assisting with event setup in relation to Crisis Group events.
The position is primarily administrative in nature but offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in a high profile international NGO. The successful candidate will discover how an organization approaches and cultivates relationships with individuals, family foundations, and corporations. Each year, a significant portion of Crisis Group's funding results from private sector support and the intern will be able to learn about the organization’s private sector initiatives directly.  

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
  • Excellent verbal and written command of English. Additional language proficiency a plus.
  • Ability to conceptualize, write and edit letters and proposals.
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email and internet applications.
  • Must be available 40 hours per week for a period of at least six months.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
Additionally, the candidate should have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work productively and independently within a demanding environment. Strong organizational skills, self motivation, flexibility, and reliability are also essential.
