Supervisor Eric Mar Legislative Internship

District 1 Supervisor Eric Mar's internship program provides a fascinating opportunity to participate in the daily operations of the City and County of San Francisco. Elected in 2008, Supervisor Mar serves the Richmond District, which includes Golden Gate Park. Supervisor Mar currently serves as the Vice-Chairs of the Board of Supervior's Budget and Finance and Neighborhood Services and Safety Committees. Regionally, he serves on the Bay Area Air Quality Management Board,
California State Association of Counties, Association of Bay Area Counties, and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority. Our office is dedicated to providing college and graduate student interns a hands on, substantive learning opportunity on community and city politics.
Internship Position:
  • Assist with the official staff duties
  • Work in a high paced environment
  • Research current events and issues that impact District 1 residents
  • Brief Supervisor Mar and staff on constituent issues
  • Interact with various City and Community Based Organizations
  • Perform research on policy issues
Responsibilities:
  • Respond to constituents' phone calls, requests, and inquires
  • Working closely with staff on committee assignments
  • Perform outreach to neighborhood groups, community leaders, and constituents
  • Provide administrative support and assistance in the day-to-day office operations
  • Assist in maintaining the Supervisor's calendar and itinerary
  • Process incoming correspondence
  • Monitor the press and media on City issues
  • Prepare honorary certificates and proclamations
Skills & Qualifications Required:
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact with a diverse range of constituents
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask and work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Basic proficiency in Internet research
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Calendar and Google Documents
  • Previous experience working in a professional setting
Time Commitment:
  • Minimum of 4 hours per shift, 8 to 12 hours per week
  • Start date negotiable
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working in direct services in the community
  • Ability to speak/read/write Cantonese, Mandarin, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish
  • Current college students or recent graduates

Please note: While all internship positions are unpaid, internships with the Board may fulfill requirements for community service, workforce development programs, and college creditsThe two daily shifts are Monday to Friday 9:00am to 1:00pm and 1:00pm to 6:00pm.
