Voluntary Intern Positions

Shelter Centre is an NGO sharing and generating knowledge about shelter, settlement and
reconstruction. Shelter Centre supports a global community of practice, following conflicts and
disasters. Our work links humanitarian, developmental, governmental, and donor organisations.
Shelter Centre is made up of highly qualified, multidisciplinary professionals, passionate about
humanitarian practice. Our unique positioning and specialised expertise allow us to reach across
traditional discourses to strengthen humanitarian operations.

Shelter Centre is currently looking to recruit interns to assist in our small but dynamic NGO, which
itself plays a central role in global humanitarian response.

This position will be on a full time basis. Shelter Centre is not currently in a position to remunerate
this internship. Candidates will have to bare their own accommodation and living costs and must
also be able to commit themselves for a minimum of one month.
Successful applicants will undertake an ongoing series of Shelter Centre programme deliverables,
such as for example assisting in the creation of a Shelter and Settlement Library, develop policy and
technical guidance in collaboration with other humanitarian partners, as well as assist in the delivery
of the first inter-cluster common humanitarian technical training.

This internship is also a unique and exciting opportunity for individuals seeking to gain invaluable
experience into the way in which smaller NGOs and indeed larger Organisations operate.

Required Experience: 
Experienced professionals with the following skills are encouraged to apply:
• Fluent English (minimum Level C1 proficiency)
• Strong communication skills, writing and editing skills
• Demonstrated computer literacy, including strong command of MS Office programmes
• Computer graphic skills, with experience with InDesign, Photoshop etc
• demonstrated ability to draft, review and edit texts
• Excellent research skills
• Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously;
• Willingness to work with minimum supervision, independently, as well as to function as a member of a team
• Proven ability to work flexibly in a small, innovative and dynamic team
• Ability to work with staff and volunteers
• Possession of strong organisational skills
• Information management
• Technical expertise in transitional settlements and shelter, town planning, architecture and/or construction would be an asset
