Summer Basic Math Curriculum Intern

Organizational Background: The Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) is a nonprofit,statewide organization that provides literacy services to adults, children, volunteers and community programs around Minnesota. In the metro area, we offer free classes at five different locations for new immigrants and refugees, as well as life-long Minnesotans, who are learningbasic English, math or computer skills, or studying for the GED.

Purpose: The Summer Basic Math Curriculum Intern will assist in the Basic Math class and help identify, create and organize supplemental activities to augment core curriculum and text. The outcome will be an organized series of supplemental materials,activities and teaching strategies that teachers and volunteers can utilize to help students comprehend Basic Math concepts.
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Previous experience or coursework in Basic Math education. Can be a current math education student.
  • Previous math teaching experience a plus.
  • Experience creating math lesson plans or developing curriculum a plus
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Dependable, prompt and able to maintain confidentiality relating to student records.
  • Self-directed and self-motivated.
  • Basic computer, Internet, and office software skills.
Training: The Minnesota Literacy Council is proud to offer a 12-hour, state-certified pre-service training for volunteers tutoring or teaching ESL. The Summer Basic Math Curriculum Intern would be requested to take this course at his/her earliest convenience at no cost to the intern. The intern would also be able to attend free in-service workshops of interest.
Location This internship is at MLC Learning Center - Lake Street, 2700 East Lake St, Minneapolis, MN (in the Coliseum Building above Denny's).
Time Commitment: Internship could begin immediately and continue through approx August 21. Hours would be Monday and/or Wednesday from 12:00 - 2:00. xible). Approximately 10-15 hours per week. Scheduled hours during the week are flexible.
Responsibilies:
  • Assist in Basic Math class 2 times per week (class meets Monday and Wednesday from 12:00 -1:00.
  • Help organize existing supplemental materials and align them with appropriatechapters of core text.
  • Help identify or create additional supplemental materials/activities/teaching strategies.
