Assistant Editor

Are you a grammar nerd? Are you super-passionate about education and writing? We're looking for a volunteer assistant editor to help us provide the latest and best news for educators working in the developing world. We are currently web-based, which means you can work from anywhere, so this is an ideal internship for students currently enrolled in classes.

Open Equal Free is a non-profit organization that empowers educators to provide world-class learning in the developing world. Rather than focusing on books, buildings, and bodies, we focus on practice, programs, and pedagogy.
Part of our mission is to provide the latest news on education in the developing world to educators in an accessible format. Our goal is to empower everyone who cares about education development to get fully up to date on the latest breaking news in our field in 15 minutes or less, every day.
We are currently seeking a motivated, conventions-conscious individual to serve as an assistant editor and copy-editor for our blog. You will be expected to edit and pre-approve articles for our editor in chief to schedule. We would also expect you to contribute to the blog, publishing three articles of about 300 words per week.
Responsibilities
- Remotely researching news on education in the developing world and creating short, original articles (around 250 – 350 words) that briefly give a synopsis of the event.
- Choosing appropriate and legally usable (through creative commons licensing or permissions) photographs and other media to be shared with stories.
- Timely editing of articles submitted by Open Equal Free authors and contributors. We post about 3 articles per day and hope to expand to an average of 5 while you're on board.
- Come willing to learn. We provide educational materials on marketing, writing, and voice that we expect all of our interns to work through. You'll also be learning about Wordpress, blogging, and as many related fields as your willing to.
Qualifications
- Must be passionate about education!
- Only highly self-motivated applicants need apply. You will be working remotely and will be expected to meet weekly deadlines without direct (micro) management.
- Excellent writing skills, especially in an informal yet respectful and positive voice.
- High School diploma required.
- Be able to spend at least 1 hour per week day, and a total of 7-10 hours per week, online.
