Private Sector Innovations in the Education Sector in Southeast Asia
Summary of Job Description
The intern will assist in the development of ADB’s strategic insight in the private sector education field. The research is expected to build PSOD’s knowledge of the range of private sector development finance activity in the education sector in Southeast Asia, identify opportunities, and generate actionable recommendations for PSOD.
The intern will work in close coordination with PSIF2 staff in undertaking a business review of the sector and formulating a strategic plan. Tasks will include:
  • Review of private sector interventions in education by ADB’s peer development finance institutions and ADB DMC Governments in the region.
  • Segmentation of Southeast Asian educational sector (primary/secondary, post-secondary) by openness and attractiveness to private operators; review of current private sector activity; and identification of typical business models and characteristics, regulatory requirements, and key players.
  • Review of insights from ADB’s sovereign lending in education in the region.
  • Identification of potential opportunities for ADB private sector projects, including promising business models and strong private sponsors.
  • Market testing of any innovative models that emerges from the work undertaken, including acceptability and appropriateness for private sector intervention. Travel may be required.

Expected Outcomes

The intern will produce research to be used in strategy formulation, appraisal of project opportunities, and the evaluation of prospective partners. Outputs will include:
  • A strategy research report
  • Presentation of report to PSOD and interested ADB staff

Educational Requirements:

Candidates must:
  • be enrolled in a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program or equivalent, at a school in one of the ADB member countries, both prior to and after the internship assignment.
  • be engaged in academic study in a field directly related to ADB's work.

Relevant Experience And Other Requirements:

  • Work experience in business research, investment strategy, or management consulting.
  • Experience in emerging markets is strongly preferred, especially Southeast Asia.
  • Exposure to education-related businesses is helpful.

Other Information
  • Position reports to assigned Professional Staff Supervisor.
  • Candidates must be a national of one of ADB’s member countries.
  • Past interns are ineligible to apply in subsequent years.
  • Close relatives of ADB personnel are ineligible to apply but ADB spouses may apply if the eligibility requirements are met.
  • Internship duration is 8-16 weeks.
  • Assignment is from June to October 2013.
