Media Assistant/Intern

Overview:
The World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a Media Assistant to expand WRI’s outreach and communications to engage media and WRI’s audiences worldwide. The Media Assistant will support WRI’s External Relations including writing, media relations, and online communications. The Media Assistant will work closely with WRI’s programmatic staff to enhance the Institute’s work on climate, energy, water, transportation, governance, business, and urban issues. This position offers an opportunity to have a high impact with a small and effective communications team, as well as room to grow within the organization.

The Media Assistant will report to the Director of Strategic Communications & Media Relations.

WRI focuses on the intersection of the environment and socio-economic development. We go beyond research to put ideas into action, working globally with governments, business, and civil society to build transformative solutions that protect the earth and improve people’s lives.
Responsibilities:
  • Draft and edit a variety of internal and external products, such as media materials (press advisories, statements, etc.), web copy, blog posts, op-eds, internal web postings, and other project-related materials.
  • Assist with media outreach, such as media pitching, media research, and maintenance of WRI’s online database (Vocus);
  • Basic visual design skills, using the WRI brand, for products such as PowerPoints and online slideshows;
  • General administrative support, such as scheduling, event logistics, and other responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in journalism, public relations, communications, international relations, or a related field is required;
  • Minimum of 1-3 years relevant work experience
  • Interest in and commitment to environmental and international development issues;
  • Familiarity and experience with international cultures is a plus.
Skills:
  • Versatile, highly-skilled writer – with professional clips or writing samples;
  • Strong written and oral communications skills in English (required), and in a second language, Chinese Mandarin, Portuguese, French, or Spanish (preferred);
  • Visual skills, such as photography, graphic design, and Photoshop are highly desirable;
  • Strong online research and computer skills, including knowledge of Excel;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced office environment, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Ability to think creatively about all elements of communications work;
  • Flexible, highly responsible, articulate, self-motivated, with a good sense of humor.
  • Finalists will need to submit 3 writing samples, and take a writing test.
Salary and Benefits:
This is a paid internship, with a desired six-month commitment. No benefits will be provided.
