Save the Children   Summary Save the Children seeks a highly qualified and independent intern to assist the School Health and Nutrition team.  The intern will focus on communication and learning. These activities include planning and organizing the monthly SHN webinar, facilitating the SHN Program Manager Facebook Group, and developing materials that communicate the achievements and lessons learned from our programs around the world.    Additionally, the School Health and Nutrition team is planning to host a Program Learning Group meeting in Nepal in November.  The goal of the PLG is to ensure that Save the Children’s SHN programs are the most effective by sharing best practices and state of the art in SHN implementation among program implementers, technical advice providers, Save the Children Member Countries, and other key partners.  The SHN Learning and Communications Intern will help the SHN team to plan and organize this international meeting.  Finally, the intern will have a short-term assignment to research and write a report for feasibility of including adjustable glasses with SHN vision programs around the world School Health and Nutrition (SHN) addresses the critical health and nutrition factors that keep children out of school and reduce their ability to learn effectively when in school.  Many school-age children in developing countries are heavily affected by parasites, such as intestinal worms and malaria, and nutritional deficiencies such as anemia. Healthier children stay in school longer, attend more regularly, learn better and grow into healthier and more productive adults. SHN program activities include deworming, micronutrient (vitamin A and iron) supplementation, malaria treatment, and vision and hearing screenings in schools. The program also works with communities to increase access to safe drinking water, sanitary latrines and hand-washing facilities in schools. Through SHN activities, children acquire knowledge and adopt positive habits that improve their health, nutrition and hygiene and prevent HIV/AIDS.  In 2010, Save the Children SHN practitioners from around the world gathered at a Program Leadership Group meeting in Zanzibar to learn from one another and compare program approaches, successes, and challenges.  One of the outcomes of the meeting was that SHN practitioners expressed interest in more regular opportunities to learn and share about new and improved practices as well as upcoming topics in the SHN sector.  Since then, the SHN team in Home Office has been strengthening our communication and promoting learning opportunities between Country Offices.  Responsibilities Support School Health and Nutrition team to write and produce program briefs and advocacy-communication products. Work with SHN team members and country offices to document successful programs Format documents to be consistent with Save the Children’s branding guidelines Translate program briefs into PowerPoint presentation as necessary.   Work with the School Health and Nutrition Specialist to implement the webinar series through such activities as: Schedule webinar presenters Coordinate webinar agendas with SHN team members and presenters Work with presenters and SHN team members to develop power point slides as necessary Invite webinar participants Master webinar software and provide technical support to Country Offices and presenters   Support planning and preparation for the School Health and Nutrition Program Learning Group meeting in November.  Work with travel agent, as necessary Coordinate with Nepal Country office to ensure that necessary materials and space are available during the meeting Work with Country Offices to prepare pre-work and/or presentations for the meeting. Work with SHN team to prepare documents and materials for the meeting.   Work with School Health and Nutrition Specialist to develop the annual Program Update report (November 2013): Liaise with Country Offices to collect information for our annual Program Update. Work with Country Offices to edit information, as necessary. Using Microsoft Publisher, design Program Update.   Work with School Health and Nutrition Senior Director to develop research and summary of adjustable glasses and potential for use with School Health and Nutrition vision programs. Perform other tasks as necessary. Requirements Strong writing skills in English Able to speak articulately and communicate effectively face-to-face and by phone Analytical and highly organized Able to work efficiently with minimal supervision Experience in event and/or meeting planning Some technical knowledge of public health and education preferred Field experience in developing countries preferred Fluency working with Microsoft Publisher and PowerPoint Interest in effective social media use Other languages especially French or Spanish would be a bonus. Must be eligible to work in the U.S. Must be enrolled in a relevant undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate academic program Must be able to receive credit from their college or institution. (A minimum requirement is a letter from a professor supporting the candidate. This is only needed when an internship is offered.)
